Wheel Chair Ramp

Some people order fomr various companies when in need of Wheel Chair Ramp. Others just try do build their own wheelchair ramp, thus trying to save some money or for variety of reasons. In any case you want your Wheelchair Ramp to be the best it can to suite your needs.

Here are few questions that you can ask yourself before you either build or order a Wheel Chair Ramp from a company.

What weight capacity am I looking for this Wheel Chair Ramp to be? Is this going to be good for doorway thresholds and raise landings? One probably would like the Wheel Chair Ramp to have a 600lbs. weight capacity because Electric Wheel Chairs can be very heavy.

Do you need one that bridges gaps over steps, curbs and raised landings? Perhaps you can ask the company if they have the ramps available in different sizes for your various needs.

Is the new Wheelchair Ramp going to be sturdy and dependable? For the smaller Ramps a good question is are they lightweight and can be transported without much efforts?

Some Wheel Chair Ramps are not for the house use only, but are built to enable access to vans or other kinds of transportation. Therefore, a question that rises here is are these rams convenient to store and set up? Is the length adjustable?

It is important that the Wheel Chair Ramp may provide a solid and safe driving surface for any kinds of wheelchairs: electric or manual. Ramps should have a 5' straight and level surface at the bottom to allow adequate stopping distance.

Electric Wheelchairs

When you search online for Electric Wheelchairs, like any other things, you will face a situation, where you will need to choose a provider out of so many companies that offer the service. The search engines will bring you thousands and thousands of results when you type the phrase ?Electric Wheelchairs.? Which vendor or provider to choose? It is important that you make an informed decision.

Things to look for when choosing an Electric Wheelchair:

First, it is good to check the company?s track record and make sure that the company, which provider Electric Wheelchairs is a very good company to do business with. When I buy big-ticket product from a company that I don?t know of, I always check the company?s record with the Better Business Bureau. You can do that by going to www.bbb.org .

While large companies may offer a great service, our experience has been that with the smaller or midsize companies you get a more personalized attention. For example an unknown company such as Jaki Med, based in Charlotte, NC, (Tel. 866.569-7877, they also provide other related supplies) may offer a better service than a large company who will run continuous ads on your TV screen. Why, because you get a personalized service, and a small company will try to do a better job to put a good word out there about its services.

A good company will also offer a free transportation during the product delivery and will service is free for a reasonable time. Ask the company if they could provide you with few previous customers with whom you could speak directly and find out what experience they had with your possible Electric Wheelchair provider. You might also want to ask from the company, to get some references that they have from the doctors for whose patients they have provided Electric Wheelchairs in the past.

A good company that provides Electric Wheelchairs should be able to assist you while doing the paper work for an insurance coverage.

Those are few things, but not all, that you might want to consider when choosing an Electric Wheelchair provider. You definitely want that the user of the Electric Wheelchair enjoy his or her way of mobility and enjoy life fully.

Ten Alternate Energy Sources To Live Well With Global Warming

Feeling hot under the collar?

Glaciers and polar ice are melting, ocean levels are rising, hot, dry weather, huge forest fires, water restrictions, crop failures?

You name it, if these don?t feature in your life yet, they soon will. Global warming and climate change are facts of life now, according to the International Panel on Climate Change, and many scientists.

Huge problems beyond our control!

But are you hot under the collar?

If you?re not, you probably live in a city where half of the Earth?s citizens live now and take much for granted. Because in city living we are far removed from natural processes that deliver our food, clothing and energy.

Does your child even know that milk comes from a cow - or a soya bean if you?re that way inclined - and not from a milk carton?

Even in the city you cannot stick your head in the sand (or under the asphalt?) and you are not immune from climate change. Witnesses are the 15,000 mostly elderly people that died in Paris alone in the sizzling hot European summer of 2003. Or the many killed in New Orleans at the ?hands? of cyclone Katrina.

And if you are hot under the collar, do you think perhaps that there will be some miraculous scientific break-through so they ever-responsible ?They? will fix the Earth? The ultimate stem cell technology maybe that can clone a new home for us!

Seriously, for many of us it is all too hard.

All we want is to live a life where we may raise our children to have a future.

A future of some predictability: of schooling, a job, a family, community, of achievements and an enjoyable life - on a healthy planet Earth.

Is this a fading dream, once a reasonable expectation?

Maybe, maybe not.

Our world is changing. There are great challenges ahead and it is too late to stop global warming. The Earth has changed and the processes it uses to regulate itself are adjusting themselves. And these changes will not suit human life as it is.

But you are not powerless.

Each person alone can change the world, one by one. Let me explain.

Do I say that these problems are under our control then?

Well, yes and no.

We are talking about a severely disabled world really.

And from the experience of disability we can learn how to survive and thrive!

?Come on, get real?, you say? Do I hear: ?Just show me the right alternate energy sources and we?ll get out of this mess.?

Yes, we desperately do need to switch to renewable energy sources that do not make a greenhouse out of our home, the Earth. But all the technology in the world will never be enough to survive and flourish>.

Renewable energy sources alone will not teach us to accept limits, unpredictability and what it is to lead a rewarding life.

How we have lived collectively, in our billions, for the last few hundred years, has got us to this point. And by changing what we do we can live through climate change as best as we might.

Even now.

It?s simple and it?s hard work. No way out of that.

Many people with severe disabilities know this. And they report the same or better life satisfaction as anyone else?under highly challenging, vulnerable circumstances.

So, we can learn to live well in a disabled world.

Regardless of what is to come you and I will be well served by the beliefs and strategies that people with disabilities use to - not just to survive - but to live well.

These are true alternate energy sources.

Those that guide us how to use what we have sustainably.

These 'disabled people' believe this:

* Accept that all of us are fragile and vulnerable
* The world is full of limits. We need some of these to live well.
* Vulnerability and dependence are an inevitable part of a whole life
* No-one is independent, but interdependent
* Connection with others is our lifeline and our wellbeing

And they do this:

* Engage with others to build positive relationship, where you live, work and play
* Pay attention to other?s needs and that of the environment
* Take responsibility for the situation you?re in
* Care for others and the environment competently
* Be assertive and use your humour and creativity

Not all people with disabilities act in this way of course. And I?d be the last to portray people with disabilities as heroes. We?re just people - trying to get on.

You try that!

Talk to that elderly woman in your street. Offer a hand when someone needs it.

Doing such small things will connect you with others and your environment.

And do also use the ?regular? renewable alternate energy sources, and recycle too.

You can change your local world by acting in these ways.

And if all fails - regardless?

Well, it?s the only way to go!

Perhaps your world might be just as hot but it?ll be cooler under your collar!

Dr Erik Leipoldt has long been concerned about the effects of global warming. In particular he uses his own experience of severe disability in practical approaches towards alternate energy sources to survive and thrive in our environmentally disabled world. Preparing to See a Social Security Doctor

I have recently been asked about preparing to see a Social Security Doctor who will conduct an examination to determine the applicant's eligibility for SSDI. This can be a scary proposition; also, if you do not take control of the situation upfront, your chances of success GREATLY DECREASE!!!

Here are some tips to increase your chances of using this situation in your favor of attaining your SSDI eligibility.

When they tell you that they want you to see their Dr. it means that, for whatever reason, the information from your own personal Doctor was not sufficient for them to determine whether the SYMPTOMS of your illnesses impact your daily living activities to such a degree that you cannot perform work in some capacity, given your education, training, work history and age that will pay you more than the monthy qualifying amount ($860/month currently).

It also means that you probably did not follow the process outlined in the DisabilityKey Workbook, acquired at the www.disabilitykey.com website. So, let's see if we can help you play catch-up.

Here are the links to the Social Security form called Residual Functional Capacity. The first is an explanation of how it is to be filled out. The second is to a copy of the actual form.

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.NSF/lnx/0424510050

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.NSF/lnx/0424510055

In a nutshell, the Social Security Administration needs to have evidence - preferably your Doctor(s)' chart notes and the results of any and all objective tests completed on you - that will allow them to complete this form about you. If they don't have it, they will send you to their Dr to get it.

In a perfect world, you would have taken this form into your own personal Doctor AHEAD OF TIME and completed it with him/her, and provided it to SSA with your application (that's what I did, and what I advise folks to do).

To see an actual example of a type of this form completed, check out the articles portions of the www.disabilitykey.com website.

BUT, the best situation is to gollow the process in the DisabilityKey Workbook up front, and present the completed package to the Social Security Administration!

Best of Luck.

Hearing Impaired in the Workplace

Being hearing impaired can be a real challenge in the workplace. The biggest problem is that few understand the problem, and usually the person with the hearing impairment is hesitative to admit the fact.

When in one on one situation things may be just fine, especially there is little background noise. In a crowd situation the hearing impaired person may hear, but not understand, 50% or more of what is said. It can be very frustrating in meetings etc.

Sound is made up of Frequency and Volume measured in decibels. In the ear that sound is converted to electrical impulses to the brain. Many things can happen to keep the sound from reaching the brain.

Say some one says the letter ?A?. That ?A? is made of the frequency determined by that person?s voice box and the loudness that he speaks. That sound goes out into the room and mixes with the noise in the room. A person with normal hearing in both ears has little problem understanding the letter ?A?.

But a person that has hearing in one ear only, cannot determine where that sound comes from. And the brain has to work twice as hard to process that sound.

It is a matter of information. With two ears twice the information available to the brain.

Same with someone that has a hearing loss the percentage of hearing loss, for whatever reason, reduces the amount of information available to the brain to process.

A normal ear may process the sound of the letter ?A? with this much information, 0110110110011011 to the brain while the damaged ear may only send this much, ------11011---------, so the brain has to look for more clues as to what that information really represents.

If you will notice a person with hearing loss does everything possible to gather clues or information to help in the hearing process. Some of the things are:

  • Looking at your face or lips while you talk.

  • Turning their head so that the good ear is facing the speaker

  • Cupping the ear with the hand

Remember even a hearing aid does not work as well as a normal functioning ear.

I hope this helps you understand what the loss of hearing really is.

Support Groups for Acne Sufferers

Even though acne sufferers know that their friends also suffer from acne, it still sometimes makes them feel isolated and alone. The unsightly zits that pop up when they are least wanted, like just before a hot date, can cause extreme despair and frustration. Worse still is that the lack of self esteem many adolescents suffer from is often made worse by what they see in the mirror during an acne attack.

There may be worse cases of acne, but for the sufferer, theirs is always the worst. If your teen suffers from the moodiness and despair brought on by acne, it might be a good idea to allow them to find an acne support group. These days, this would usually be an online forum where teens can post questions about treatment and the likely duration of their acne and get quick answers from one or more specialists in the field.

It could be a chat room where they could make friends with other suffers and find out for sure that they are not only not the only ones to suffer from acne, but that others also feel the same way about it as they do.

Make sure that you find the right one for your child. It doesn?t pay to be casual about chat rooms because you don?t know who is likely to be lurking there, but if you can get in first and check out that the site is of good reputation, it will ease your mind and keep your child safe.

A quick search on Google will bring up many acne sites and most of them seem to have helpful advice, even if it is aimed at eventually selling their product. But if you choose one with .org after the address, you will know that this means it is a non-profit organization, and so they will not be giving advice simply to sell a product.

www. acne-answers.org is one such site. You can join up for free to receive their weekly newsletter on controlling the dreaded zit, or can even do an e-course on acne control.

Acne Support Group typed into Google will bring up a registered charity (No. 1026654) where teens, or anyone can email their question about acne and get a sensible reply, either by a cosmetic or beauty consultant who is trained in acne problems.

When finding acne sites, just make sure they are not in another country, because some acne treatments are not available in all countries.

Come visit http://www.AcneGalore.info for all your acne needs. Regular published articles on acne information.

Tai Chi for Health and Wellness

Walking through an assisted living center or senior care facility you are confronted with a glaring reality that is difficult to ignore. Most of the residents are moving with the aid of a cane, walker or wheelchair. Those who are able to walk unassisted do so at a slow and deliberate pace talking each step as if they were traversing a minefield. Every venture out of their room carries with it the risk that this could be their last, for most are one fall away from a broken hip and total immobility and even death. Although not uncommon, this severe deterioration of general health and leg strength is preventable and often reversible. Tai Chi Chuan, the Great Ultimate Fist, offers the ideal recipe for improved mental, physical and spiritual health and a better overall life experience.

Seniors and mature adults often suffer from a host of mental and physical conditions. They are susceptible to numerous maladies that severely restrict their mobility and reduce the quality of their life. It is not unusual for mature adults to experience heart problems, poor circulation, osteo arthritis, forgetfulness, lack of coordination, muscle and leg weakness, pain, digestive and colon irregularities, kidney malfunction breathing difficulties, low bone density, poor posture and balance and a fear of falling.

Today?s seniors come from generations that exercised little and had even less regard for a healthy diet. Many grew up during the Great Depression where survival and not personal health was of primary concern. Chen Style Tai Chi, created over 800 years ago by a Taoist, Chang San-Feng, was originally a fighting art. Yang Lu Chan popularized Tai Chi by drastically restructuring the form. He deleted several difficult jumps, leaps and aggressive kicks and punches and created a program suitable for all ages and physical conditions. His family continued to improve the style until it evolved into its present form known as Yang Family Style ?Large Frame? which consists of 108 continuous movements designed to improve health, cure illness and revitalize the mind, body and spirit. The foundation of Tai Chi began with the 3000-year-old concept of Yin and Yang, the principal energy forces making up the universe. When these two opposing influences are in balance, the Chi or vital energy will be harmonious and health at and optimum level.

Tai Chi is considered one of the Nei Gong or internal arts, meaning its primary focus is to develop the body from the inside out. This is in contrast to Wai Gong, which emphasizes external muscle development. The 108 movements of Yang Style Tai Chi are a perfect blend of Yin and Yang energies, strengthening muscle tissue through the continuous tensing and relaxing motions; massaging the joints by the process of the slow, rhythmic transition from one movement to the next; and stimulating and exercising the internal organs as a result of the gentle twisting and turning of the waist.

As the body ages there is a natural tendency to reduce the level of mental and physical activity, which in turn sets the stage for what is known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as stagnation. The presence of stagnation always results in the deterioration of overall health and wellness. Regular practice of Tai Chi will improve posture, balance and flexibility, build strength and endurance, correct digestive irregularities, increase muscle and bone density, balance the metabolism, strengthen the immune system, relieve tension and stress, release anxiety, create a mind-body connection, enhance focus and awareness, release energy blocks, gain a sense of calmness and well-being and lessen mood swings. Tai Chi will also effectively treat chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia and migraines.

Physically demanding activities such as jogging, weight lifting, high impact aerobics? are not suitable for everyone. However, the slow and evenly paced movements of Tai Chi make it uniquely adaptable to young, old, strong and weak. The intensity of the training can be perfectly matched to the age and health of the participants much the same as a dimmer switch regulates the brightness of a light. This means that all people ? athletes, dancers, elderly? will benefit from regular practice of Tai Chi. With 108 movements, there is a broad range of motion that exercises every cell of the body at a level that reaches deep into the very core.

There are no clothing or equipment requirements and just about any moderately sized space will work. The slow, relaxed pace of the form creates a unique bond where the mind sees the movements and transfers that vision to the physical body. With practice, the mind and body begin to act and re-act as one.

Who should do Tai Chi? Everyone will benefit whether it is your primary form of exercise or simply added to an existing program. The key is regular practice of the movements blended with meditation to attain a state of mindfulness. As your skill increases you will experience a new found understanding of yourself and the world around you.

The Importance of Cardiovascular Training

The most important muscle in the body is the heart. Yet, many people who workout seem to think they don?t need to do cardio. Cardiovascular (or cardio) exercise has numerous health benefits. In addition to burning calories and lowering your body fat, it will strengthen your heart and lungs. Since heart disease is the leading cause of premature death for both men and women, cardiovascular fitness is a very important and should never be over looked.

Most experts agree that cardiovascular training should last for 20 to 60 minutes, with the norm being 30 to 40 minutes. It should be performed a minimum of three days per week, with four to five days being optimal and six being the max. In order for an exercise to be considered cardiovascular or aerobic, it needs to elevate your heart rate to 60 to 85 percent of its maximum rate (the fastest it could possibly beat). This means that when you are in the ?Zone?, you should still be able to talk but not carry on a long conversation.

For a complete fitness experience, weight training and cardiovascular training should share equal parts in your workout routine. With regular cardio workouts, you'll find that you have enough stamina to give your weight training a better effort. Just begin your conditioning by picking an activity and work on exercising intensely enough to raise your heart rate and keep it elevated.

Understanding and Engaging Unbearable Pain

Emotional and mental pain its especially challenging because of the illusive nature and the stigmas attached to it in our culture. Because mental/emotional pain is invisible, we can easily doubt its validity and react to it by denying it, feeling ashamed of it and judging ourselves. Internalized pain can isolate us and alienate us from ourselves and from others. It can take on a life of its own and become an identity that distorts who we really are.

Few people are able to tolerate mental and emotional pain in others or to be compassionate and accepting of it in themselves. And this is as true of those in the medical profession and our friends and family as everyone else. In our culture we are taught to snap out it and get on with life. We resent it when we feel helpless and powerless and have no answer to our own pain or to the suffering of others.

In seeking relief from pain, we often want to get away from it, get rid of it or kill it, but there are times when the only possible relief can come from transforming our relationship to it - non-judgmentally opening up to its moment-by-moment-sensations and seeing it for what it is; expanding our breath and directing it to the part of the body or psyche that feels the pain; and noticing the negative stories that the mind is telling us and letting them go. Preventing Scarring From Acne

Almost everyone will suffer from acne at one time during their lives. Acne comes in many forms, pimples - blackheads and whiteheads are what we commonly see, but if these become infected with bacteria they can turn into boil like pustules that can be painful as well as unsightly.

Acne is most common in teens where hormones are upsetting the bodies balance and over productive oil glands along with clogged pores cause the start of pimples. While pimples will eventually go away, acne scarring can have longer lasting effects.

The most effective way to prevent acne scarring is to leave the acne alone. Don?t touch your pimples or pop them as this can create scarring. Of course, reducing the incidence of acne and helping to keep it in control with proper cleaning methods as well as diet can go a long way towards reducing the temptation of pimple popping and thus, reduce the risk of scarring.

The best thing you can do to clear your acne is to develop a proper cleaning routine. This involves washing your skin with a gentle soap twice a day and can mean using acne treatment products during the day and night. In addition to washes, you might try skin exfoliates, day and night creams and facial scrubs.

If your doctor has prescribed medicine for your acne, always follow his directions for use. Never use harsh chemicals or soaps on your face.

It?s important to make your acne treatment routine acne easy enough for you to maintain. If you think that you don?t have enough time for your regimen, then it is vital that you make more time, scale down the regimen or live with the acne. Maybe you need to get up a bit earlier or cut out half hour of TV at night, but won?t having a clear complexion be worth it?

If you have a really bad case of acne, you may need to seek the help of a dermatologist. He can recommend prescriptions that may help and in some cases you may want to consider laser treatment that literally burns the bacteria out of the skin. This helps to unclog your pores and kills the bacteria which is the main pimple causing culprit. If you don?t want to use chemical drugs or lasers, you may want to explore more natural herbal remedies for your skin.

If you do have unsightly scarring, you can get treatment. Scars from acne are deep inside the skin and acne laser scarring treatments can help to correct this in many cases. However, you do need to be careful when opting for this type of treatment as it can be expensive.

If you do decide the cost is worth it, then choose where you get the treatment carefully. Like most anything else, you get what you pay for and you need to pick a reputable doctor and not go with the best bargain. Bear in mind that you will need to pay a reasonable amount of money if you want good treatment results. You may need several sessions depending on how severe your scars are.

The benefits of treating acne scarring is that you get clearer, healthy skin. Your acne is not prone to returning because the laser treatment kills the bacteria and shrinks the glands that produce the oil which blocks your pores. Once you have the treatment, however you do need to make a commitment to yourself to take good care of your skin and eat right so you can have a clear and healthy complexion for life.

Silicosis: The Forgotten Cousin of Asbestosis and Mesothelioma

Silicosis, Mesothelioma and Asbestosis are all three occupational related cancers that are preventable.

Silicosis is a respiratory disease caused by the inhalation of silica dust, which leads to inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue. Similar to Mesothelioma and Asbestosis, Silicosis silently caused millions of industry related health issues and deaths before it was discovered and could be properly diagnosed.

The main cause of Silicosis is long-term exposure to silica. Silica is a common, naturally occurring crystal. It is found in most rock beds and forms dust during mining, quarrying, tunneling, construction and work with many metal ores. Silica is a main component of sand, so glass workers, sand-blasters and construction laborers also receive heavy exposure to silica.

Risk factors for Silicosis include but are not limited to any work that includes exposure to silica dust. Mining, stone and concrete cutting, quarrying, road and building construction, work with abrasives manufacturing, sand blasting and many other occupations and hobbies involve exposure to silica.

Intense exposure to silica may result in symptoms of or full blown Silicosis in a year or less, but it usually takes at least 10 or 15 years of exposure before most symptoms of Silicosis develop. Silicosis as well as Mesothelioma and Asbestosis have become less common since the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) instituted laws and regulations requiring the use of protective equipment, to be provided by employers, that limit the amount of a worker?s hazardous material exposure. Now, in most cases, it is legally and lawfully the responsibility of your employer to protect you by providing personal protection equipment (PPE).

The three different types of Silicosis are:

* Acute Silicosis -- results from short-term exposure to very large amounts of silica. The lungs become very inflamed and may fill with fluid, causing severe shortness of breath and low blood oxygen levels.

* Accelerated Silicosis -- occurs after exposure to larger amounts of silica over a shorter period of time (5 - 15 years). Inflammation, scarring, and symptoms progress faster in accelerated silicosis than in simple silicosis.

* Simple chronic silicosis -- results from long-term exposure (more than 20 years) to low amounts of silica dust. Nodules of chronic inflammation and scarring provoked by the silica dust form in the lungs and chest lymph nodes. This disease may feature breathlessness and may resemble chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

If you feel that you are in an industry with a high risk of exposure to silica dust, or any other hazardous material, you should take it upon yourself to use every method necessary to protect yourself from exposure. It is important to discuss any health concerns that you may have with your employer and have your employer provide you with the personal protective equipment required by law to minimize your exposure to hazardous materials such as silica. It is legally your employer?s responsibility to provide you with safety devices that will protect you but it is ultimately your responsibility to protect your health and the health of your family.

If your employer is lax or refuses to provide for your safety, it is important that you contact your local, state or federal agency that oversees health and safety law and compliance to report it right away. In most situations you can report any negligence anonymously to prevent being singled out and demoted or fired by your employer. Many times your employer will be forced to comply with the laws by the governing agency and your problems will be solved. As an employer myself, I see the need to protect my employees at any cost because they are not only my most valued assets they are people with families and simply deserve to live and work in the safest environment possible. If your employer does not feel this way, you should not feel one bit of remorse if you have to report abuse to the proper authorities.

If you feel that you have been negligently exposed to Silica, or any other hazardous material and are now experiencing health related issues from it, you should contact a competent lawyer or law office immediately and discuss your situation with them. You may be entitled to compensation due to your employer?s negligence. There are lawyers and attorneys that specialize in Silicosis, Mesothelioma, Asbestosis and a vast array of other occupational health related diseases.

Benefits of Full Body Massage

Full body massage can produce multiple benefits for your health. These benefits go far beyond an hour spent in relaxing quietly, escaping the day. An increasing amount of evidence indicates that stress and tension form the root causes of many diseases and illnesses. Hence, if you able to find ways to alleviate or relieve your stress, you are preventing health problems from emerging or becoming worse.

Going for a full body massage on a regular basis is one excellent way to help you fight off tensions. Full body massage stimulates the production of endorphins that promotes relaxation and drowsiness.

When you go for full body massage, your head to your toes and feet are massaged both front and back. A variety of strokes that includes kneading, pulling, wringing, hacking and gliding are used on various parts of the body.

If you are already ill or suffering from constant fatigue or pain, then full body massage can play a big part in your treatment. A full body massage helps to improve blood circulation and blood becomes more easily transportable to the vital organs in your body. This is vital for smooth functioning of your internal body parts. In addition, when blood is supplied to areas that have been injured before, repair and renewal of cells and tissues take place more easily. Combined with conventional medicine and other therapies, repeat sessions of full body massage can do much to accelerate your recovery.

Here are a few disorders that benefit from regular full body massage:

* Depression
* Infertility
* Eating disorders
* Post-operative recovery
* Autism
* Immune-suppressed systems
* Diabetes
* High blood pressure
* Sleep disorders
* Cancer related fatigue
* Low back pain
* Spinal cord injuries

When you choose full body massage, you choose a non-invasive procedure. In addition, full massage therapy, which is relatively safe, can be a complementary treatment to other medical treatments.

Other than improved blood circulation, here are other benefits that you can expect to experience from a full body massage.

* Stimulated lymph system
* Stimulated immune system
* Relaxed muscles
* Reduced cramps
* Increased flexibility
* Reduced recovery time
* Released endorphins
* Reduced post-operative scar tissue and edema
* Reduced migraine pain
* Improved range of motion
* Reduced depression
* Shortened labor and delivery in expectant mothers

As helpful as full body massage can be, those with certain illnesses should avoid the treatment. These include phlebitis, certain cancers, certain heart conditions, certain skin problems, and contagious diseases.

To be absolutely sure, check with your doctor first if you are chronically ill. Otherwise, enjoy on a regular basis!

Grate or shred the pulp of a raw potato and rub it on the skin to cure acne fast ? including pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.

Ripe tomato pulp has vitamin C as well, and can be applied to the face for up to one hour. Doing this regularly will help keep skin clear and bright.

Acne Free Skin through Ayurveda

Acne is a very common skin problem which affects young people at their puberty and few adults till they reach 45. Acne are referred as Youvana pitikas (which means the eruptions of youth) in ayurveda. This shows the prevalence of acne from ages. Ayurveda has described the causes of acne and recommends the best natural herbal acne remedies too.

What causes acne?

A large number of oil producing glands called ?sebaceous glands? are present under the skin ( see figure (http://www.ayurhelp.com/Normalskin.htm) - skin cross section) on face, back, chest and shoulders. During puberty or menopause due to the influence of the sex hormones, which are produced in male and female, these glands become more active and produce an oily secretion called ?sebum?. The sebum makes the skin more oily .The excessive sebum clogs the skin pore or the pit of the hair follicle forming acne.

The blocked pore or acne acts as an excellent habitat for bacteria. The bacterial infection causes inflammation (red, painful swelling of the infected area) of the clogged pore or hair follicle leading to eruption of pimples. Vata and Kapha are two main doshas, which are involved in eruption of acne and pimples. Rakta dhatu or blood also plays an important role in formation of acne.

Vata when gets vitiated due to unhealthy diet and lifestyles affects other two doshas (kapha and pitta) to aggravate them. Aggravated pitta affects rakta dhatu or blood. The vitiated blood affects the skin and causes excess secretion of oil from sebaceous glands. Kapha has sticky property. The aggravated kapha imparts the stickiness to the oil produced by sebaceous glands of skin. Thus the thick sebaceous plugs are formed in skin pores and hair follicles leading to eruption of acne.

Acne worsens when

1.grease, dirt or other harsh chemicals accumulate on skin.

2.you have Increased stress levels.

3.you indulge in Squeezing or pinching of acne.

4.when there are hormonal imbalances during menstrual cycle, menopause and puberty.

5.you are under medications like steroids or hormonal therapy.

Precautions to be taken to avoid exaggeration of acne eruptions:

?Avoid foods which are spicy, dry and oily. These may cause indigestion and lead to vitiation of vata.

?Keep a habit of emptying bowels regularly this always normalizes vata.

?Avoid fast foods and soft drinks.

?Wash your face twice daily with mild cleanser.

?Put a hair band to avoid falling of hair on face. The sweat and dirt accumulated on hair may fall on facial skin through hair strands

?Avoid application of scrubs.

?Wash your hair regularly with mild shampoo to keep it clean and avoid dandruff.

?Squeezing and pricking of pimples cause scaring. Hence avoid this

?Avoid exposure of skin to severe climatic conditions.

?Avoid oil based moisturizers. Water based moisturizers are always beneficial.

?Drink plenty of water.

?Practice a regular exercise regimen

Natural Herbal acne Home remedies :

?Wash your face with lukewarm water and mild soap twice a day.

?Wash fresh methi leaves (fenu greek leaves) and grind it to make a paste. Apply it on face and wash it off with lukewarm water after 10 minutes.

?Grind juicy tender neem leaves with turmeric to a consistency of paste. Apply this paste on acne and pimples. Wash this off after it dries.

?Apply a face pack of ripe tomato pulp and wash it off as soon as it dries naturally (preferably after 45 minutes) .

?Do not keep the make up while sleeping. Cleanse it with a mild herbal cleanser.

?Mix besan flour (gram flour) with rose water and apply a face pack.

?Consuming fresh vegetable salads and fresh fruits keeps the skin healthy and resistant to blemishes.

?Drink plenty of water (15 glasses a day)

Acne Scars What Treatments Are Available?

Scars from acne can have a serious effect on a person's self-esteem and emotional state. Fortunately there have been advances in the treatment of acne-related scarring in recent years. However, it is important to note that nothing will completely heal most scars.

Laser Therapy - Using lasers to treat scars is a relatively new technology, but is one of the most promising options for severe cases. The lasers remove the scarred skin, and encourage growth of new skin in its place. After treatment, the skin will be pink and swollen for a week or so. During this time, bandages need to be kept over the skin to prevent infection. It takes months for the skin to return to normal, but most people will see less noticeable scars and smoother skin. Laser scar treatment can be expensive, but may be appropriate for severe cases.

Surgical Therapy (Dermabrasion) - This form of scar treatment uses a motorized burr, which usually contains diamond particles. Diamonds are extremely strong abrasives when in a powder-form. A scab will form once the procedure is completed. Once it is healed, a smoother pink layer of new skin is underneath. Multiple treatments are often necessary, and each one can cost $1500.

Creams and Gels - There are many topical treatments that claim to reduce the appearance of scars. Many contain Vitamin E and other nutrients. Mederma is a popular brand name. Many people report that it can improve scars in as little as 8 weeks for new scars, or 6 months for older scars. Results with topical ointments like this will vary from person to person.

Collagen Injection - This is a temporary fix, where the patient's own body fat or collagen is injected into the scar site. This works well for some people with deep-pitted scars. The material injected serves to raise the skin, and reduce the pitted appearance, and wrinkling from the scar. However, this procedure needs to be repeated every 6 months and can be expensive.

Cow Juice and Acne

There is growing evidence that suggests that the consumption of cow?s milk can actually cause acne breakouts. There are many hormones, bioactive molecules, and other substances found in milk that have a direct relationship to the development of acne in humans.

One such substance is iodine. For people who have acne-prone skin, iodine can be a problem because it can stimulate pores into producing acne-causing oil. Dermatological studies have shown that 1,000 micrograms (or 1 milligram) of iodine a day can have acne-producing effects.

11% of milk samples gathered from over 150 dairy herds in the state of Wisconsin were found to contain over 1,000 micrograms of iodine per liter of milk. Iodine enters cow?s milk through milking equipment and through some medications given to milk-producing cows.

The hormone 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is one hormone that is known to be a direct cause of acne flare-ups. DHT causes stimulation of the oil-making cells of human skin, which can cause acne.

While cow?s milk does not contain DHT, it contains many other hormones that are broken down into DHT. In fact, the volume of these hormones is particularly high in the milk of pregnant cows, which comprises 75% to 90% of the milk and dairy products found in supermarket coolers.

Many of the hormones found in the milk produced by pregnant cows also may break down to create androgen, a hormone that causes an increase in the production of sebum, the waxy material that is secreted by the sebaceous glands. Sebum is known to clog pores and to lead to acne breakouts.

In addition to the hormones found in cow?s milk, the fat, sugar, and animal proteins found in milk may also aggravate acne.

Research has shown that many of the foods commonly thought to be associated with acne, such as greasy french fries, oily pizza, or sugary chocolate, are not actually related to acne at all. Instead, it is milk and dairy products that are more likely to cause an increase in persistent acne breakouts.

Whole milk, reduced fat milk, and skim milk, are all equal in their potential to cause acne when consumed. Those who suffer from acne should also watch out for milk-based dairy products such as cottage cheese and cream cheese. Dairy products also often contain high levels of butterfat and milk sugars, both of which should be avoided by those who suffer from frequent acne breakouts.

Many dermatologists advise their patients to omit all milk and dairy products from their diets in an effort to minimize the appearance of acne. Patients who choose to adopt this method of acne-control, however, should be conscious that their milk and dairy-free diets have appropriate amounts of calcium. These people might consider taking a daily calcium supplement, and should talk with their doctors about how else they might compensate for the omission of milk and dairy products from their diets.

A clinical dermatological study conducted over 10 years concluded that milk contributed significantly to acne problems of a large percentage of the 1,088 teenagers who took part in the study. The study also showed marked improvements in the teens? acne as they curbed their consumption of all milk and dairy products.

All About Acne Creams

Any normal teenager (and in some cases adults) all over the world are likely to suffer from a common ailment. Irrespective of their backgrounds, irrespective of their social standing and even irrespective of their race or nationality, they all have one common enemy. And this enemy goes by the much dreaded name of acne. While acne is a normal and natural part of growing up, most youngsters detest the very sight and feel of acne. Especially at an age when external appearance takes precedence over anything else, they feel confused, horrified and in some serious cases, even disturbed by the acne.

Fortunately, the ever greedy pharmaceutical companies have not been laggardly in spotting this malady as an exceptional source of profit. Which explains the numbers and range of the acne creams that flood every supermarket and pharmacy shelf. This is no exaggeration. Get in to the nearest pharmacy and see for yourself. I would not be surprised if you found an entire section dedicated to acne creams. In fact, more than any other course of treatment, acne creams are viewed and accepted as the most popular acne treatment. And the most common over the counter acne treatments continue to be acne creams. But have you ever wondered why acne creams continue to be so popular? Well I have. And in a bid to find an answer, turned to human psychology. According to most people (and you can test this for yourself!) the most commonly attributed cause for acne is poor hygiene. Although this is not true, most people continue to wash their faces day in and day out, oblivious to the damage they are causing themselves. And what aids washing faces best? Acne creams of course. Not only do these creams seem to be doing a good job or removing the acne, they also, psychologically, indicate to the user that they are helping keep the skin hygienic. So, more and more teenagers and even a few older people continue to buy and stock up on acne creams in the mistaken belief that these acne creams are helping them.

In most cases, acne creams don?t do any harm, even though they may not actually be helpful in getting rid of the acne. But care must be taken to ensure that any acne cream used should be free of oil and sunscreens. All acne creams should also be free of comedogenic elements in order to be helpful. And finally, all purported acne creams should at least be manufactured by a credible and dependable manufacturer in order to ensure that even if they provide no benefit, they should at least bring on no further harm!

Herbs that Heal Herbal Remedies

Herbs for General Health and Healing

For people who are leery of the alarming side effects of many drugs and medicines on the current market, or just concerned about taking too many pills, there is another option: herbal remedies. The use of herbs for healing has been recorded as early as 2500 B.C. Herbs were widely used as medicines prior to the advent of science with its developments in chemicals, drugs and medicines. Before modern science there were only two basic options for healing - the various plants with known healing properties and the spiritual, including prayer, the laying on of hands, magic and voodoo. For our purposes, we'll concentrate on the world of healing plants and leave the spiritual up to the individual.

What is an herb? How is it different from a spice? An herb is a seed-producing plant of the type that does not develop persistent woody tissue, such as that of a shrub or a tree, but remains more or less soft or succulent (having thick or fleshy stems or leaves which can hold a large quantity of water). Some examples of common herbs would be catnip, chamomile, hyssop and spearmint. A spice is any of the various vegetable plants that are also fragrant or aromatic and are pungent to the taste. Allspice, cumin, paprika and rosemary are all spices. So an herb may also be a spice, like cinnamon or mace.

Most herbs and spices are sun-dried or cured in their indigenous environment. For example, the ginger root is harvested then cleaned before it is dried and exported. Sometimes ginger root is also peeled and sometimes the ginger root is boiled in sugar and preserved before its exportation. Cloves are the dried unopened flower buds of the Syzygium aromaticum, a tree of the Myrtle family, while peppercorns are the dried berries of the Piper nigrum plant. The nutmeg is the hard, aromatic seed of an evergreen tree called Myristica fragrans. The seed is dried and ground or grated and used as a spice.

Herbs can act as astringents (something that slows or stops the flow of blood or other secretions), alkalinizers (something that raises the pH above 7.0), acidifiers (something that lowers the pH below 7.0), tonics (something that refreshes, invigorates or strengthens), diuretics (something that promotes the flow of urine), diaphoretics (something that promotes perspiration), laxatives (something that promotes bowel movements) and also as nervines (something which excites or relaxes the nerves). Many herbs act as more than one of these, such as Acacia, which has a soothing or softening effect on mucous membranes, an astringent effect, limiting secretions of glands and nutritive qualities as well as nourishing the tissues to which it is applied.

The herbs with mostly astringent (causing blood or other secretions to slow or stop) effects are Acacia, Acorn, Agaric, Agrimony, English Alder, Amaranth, Trailing Arbutus, Balm, European Birch, Bistort, Blackberry, Black Willow Bark, Cinnamon, Black Cohosh, Eyebright, Fireweed, Fluellin, Houseleek, Jambul, Pilewort, Red Root, Red Sage, Peruvian Rhatany, Rhubarb, Rosemary and Scullcap.

Herbs with a mostly alkalizing (raising the pH) effect are Dandelion and Kelp.

The general tonic (nourishing, invigorating, strengthening or refreshing) herbs are Agrimony, English Alder, Alstonia Bark, Angustura, Asafetida, Balmony, Balm of Gilead, Bamboo Brier, Barberry, Berberis, Beth Root, Blackberry, Boneset, Box Leaves, Bugle, Catnip, Celery, Chamomile, Culver's Root, Dandelion, Eyebright, Gentian, Golden Seal, Juniper Berry, Lemon, Mistletoe, Nux Vomica, Peruvian Rhatany, Rosemary, Snake Root and Tansy.

Herbal Tonics for specific areas are the Heart Tonics made from Butterbur and Mescal Buttons, Intestinal Tonics made from Cascara Sagrada, Nerve Tonics made from Damiana and Oats, Stomach Tonics made from Burdock and Sassafras, Strengthening Tonics made from Lucerne and Simaruba and Weight-adding Tonics made from Lucerne.

Herbs having a mostly diuretic (causing urination) effect are Agrimony, Arenaria Rubra, Asafetida, Asparagus, Belladonna, Bilberries, American Bittersweet, Black Currant, Black Haw, Blue Flag, Boldo, Boneset, Bryony, Buchu, Burdock, Butterbur, Caroba, Celery, Coffee, Black Cohosh, Couchgrass, Damiana, Dandelion, Figwort, Garlic, Goat's Rue, Jambul, Jewel Weed, Juniper Berry, Kelp, Lily-of-the-Valley, Night-Blooming Cereus, Onion, Paraguay Tea, Pitcher Plant, Queen's Delight, Soap Tree and White Bryony.

The herb with a mostly diaphoretic (causing perspiration) effect is American Bittersweet. Many other herbs have this effect in addition to their main use.

Herbs having a laxative (causing bowel movements) effect are Agar, American Black Alder, Asafetida, Ash, Asparagus, American Bearsfoot, Benne, Blue Flag, Boneset, Burdock, Cleavers, Culver's Root, Damiana, Dandelion, Fig, Hartstongue, Honeysuckle, Horehound, Olive, Pitcher Plant, Queen's Delight and Rhubarb which has the mildest laxative effect.

Herbs that affect the nerves are Black Willow Bark, which eases inflammation of the nerves, Passion Flower, which eases nerve pain, Asafetida, which is a nerve stimulant, Gentian, which is another Nerve Tonic and Black Currant, which restores the nervous system. For nervous disorders, use Arrach, Belladonna, Caroba, Chamomile, Gelsemium, Gentian, Golden Seal, Kelp, Lobelia, Mistletoe, Muira-Puama, Oats, Passion Flower, Rosemary or Scullcap.

Various parts of the herb are used - the flowers, leaves, buds, stems and also the root. Preparations vary as well. Sometimes the part or part used will be steeped and used as a tea, sometimes as a wash, sometimes as a tincture, where alcohol is the activating agent and other ways as well.

Consult an herbal professional or documentation before using herbs. While most herbs are completely safe to use, some herbs are OK just in small doses, but sometimes harmful in larger doses. Learn as much as you can about the herb and follow dosing instructions carefully, especially if using them for children.

Luckily, we have much information available on the Internet, on herbs and other topics. There are libraries in most towns and cities where one can find specific information on herbs and herbal remedies. Health stores that carry herbs and herbal preparations are more plentiful than they used to be and there are more and more healing practitioners versed in using herbs, so gathering beneficial and comprehensive information should not be a problem.

Do Staph Infections Cause Acne Breakouts?

There is no simple answer to this question. All acne is caused by some sort of infection. It can be due to clogged pores becoming infected, or an infection under the skin that can cause acne on the surface.

Staph infections can manifest themselves on the skin, in the form of eruptions that are pus-filled and look like boils. But, if the eruptions are smaller, they can be more like zits or pimples.

Typically, more than one eruption will be present, and they can be present in one or more areas on the body. They can be painful and very unsightly.

These eruptions are different than normal acne in that they are not caused by pores clogging and becoming infected. Therefore, normal acne treatments like topical Benzoyl peroxide will not be effective in treating the breakout.

If you have a staph infection, you will need a doctor to diagnose it and treat it. Antibiotics MUST be prescribed in order to cure a staph infection.

How do you tell if you have a staph infection or if it is just regular acne? It can be hard to tell the difference, but some signs to look for are eruptions in places you do not normally get pimples. For instance, if you occasionally get pimples, but only on your chin, then suddenly you start to experience eruptions on your cheeks or forehead, it may not be simple acne.

Everyone?s skin is different, and only you know how your skin usually behaves. If you see signs that something unusual is happening, then you should check with your doctor to find out the cause.

The Adult Acne Kit Trend

A trend is developing toward the use of new packaging and marketing concepts for skin care products. The adult acne kits which are beginning to hit the shelves are geared more as a comprehensive approach to longer term skin problems than are other single purpose applications.

Purchasing a kit not only has the advantage of a quicker shopping trip but it also contains more thorough product information and use instructions. These are especially helpful for adult skin care issues because of the mixed assortment of problems to be found in adult skin.

Dry skin is the more normal aspect of adult skin and defines the difference between most teen oriented skin care products and those more specific to adult skin. The main acne fighting ingredients are the same from adult skin care to those intended for other age groups. The use of benzoyl peroxide in these treatments is pervasive. However, the solution varies widely.

Different products contain on the low end about a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide solution for adult and baby acne care. An average of about 5% is used for most age groups and more severe torso acne is treated with 7% or 10% solutions of benzoyl peroxide to dry excess oil and disinfect skin.

Other ingredients like salicylic acid are used in similarly moderated solutions for improved performance in different age groups. Higher percentages of this are used for exfoliation without severe drying. So the difference between them is less critical.

The use of the kits includes a detailed approach to the manner of its use. Product information for skin care products tends to be a sketchy two liner under the listing instructions. This hasty fine print on a plastic tube is not going to deliver the detailed list of skin care procedures.

Mesothelioma: A Cancer Which Is Caused Due To Exposure To Asbestos

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which is generally caused due to the exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma is a critical form of cancer which generally affects the lungs of the human organism. Mostly those people who are very much prone to the exposure of asbestos in their day to day life will lead to get affected by Mesothelioma. In this consideration, mostly, the labors in the industrial and in the construction firm get affected by Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is virtually caused due to the exposure to asbestos, which generally gets into one?s body through tiny dust like particles which float in the air in the process of inhaling.

Symptoms of mesothelioma are many and varied. The most common sign or symptom of Mesothelioma is lack of proper inhaling, continuous coughing, constant pain in the chest, etc. In addition to this, loss of weight, swelling of the abdomen, fever and anemia are also some other Mesothelioma symptoms. Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer and hence the proper diagnosis of it cannot be enhanced due to the different symptoms that crop up in Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can be treated in various ways. The most common and the basic form of Mesothelioma treatment is through surgery. The surgery will help in the removal of the affected lining of the body organs whether it be in the chest, abdomen or in the neck. Another popular form of Mesothelioma treatment is the radiation therapy. This radiation therapy or radiotherapy is implied in order to kill the cancer affects cell areas.

Mesothelioma thus becomes a deadly disease when no remedial measures are taken to overcome it and when exposure to asbestos is not controlled. But at present, there are various Mesothelioma law firms which are established in many countries of the world especially in those places where there is high percentage of mesothelioma, a cancer which is the result of high exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma law firm is entitled to provide advice to thousands of mesothelioma patients every year. Mesothelioma law firms are large enough to have huge resources and years of experience. Each case of mesothelioma is handled individually and proper investigations are made to help out the clients. Mesothelioma law firm provides adequate counseling to the victims of asbestos. The mesothelioma law firms are based on two aspects. Firstly, to alert the victims about the possibility of this cancer due to the exposure to asbestos and secondly to improve the work place where exposure of asbestos are common.

Acne Treatment Finally Some Facts

Acne is, perhaps, the single treated skin disorder and has been addressed in a wide variety of ways. Often the wisest step is to develop a program in consultation with a dermatologist or medical practitioner. Even with help, there may be a trial-and-error process in finding the right solution. There are also some solutions advised by alternative medicine practitioners of various sorts and we will also touch on them.

Some mild washing of the face may be useful. But vigorous and frequent washing is discouraged by dermatologists. Topical creams may be helpful but overuse can lead to side effects and problems. One popular home treatment is salicylic acid, found in face washes and medicated facial pads. It curtails the hair follicles from shedding excess skin, which leads to the clogging of pores. Another home treatment is benzoyl peroxide, found in certain soap and face wash products, but also in topical creams. It can produce excessive drying and redness- so it is often recommended that one begin by trying it once a day and, then, if that works, try it twice. Results should be apparent after a few weeks.

In the world of orthodox medicine, there are various types of prescription medications and face washes. If you go to your local drugstore or supermarket, you can find lots of different products whose objective is to treat acne. None of these products produce instantaneous results and one part of a sensible prescription for treatment is patience. Since some of these products may have side effects, you should know their contents and possible effects. Over-use of the wrong product can actually exaggerate the condition.

Experts generally think that acne is caused when an excess of oil, secreted by tiny glands surrounding the hair follicles combine with dead skins to clog the pores of the skin. Bacteria, chiefly Propionibacterium acnes or P. acnes develops in these pore pockets which leads to the blackheads, white heads and more common pimples that we associate with this unpleasant form.

Some of the prescription topical solutions include antibiotics. Antibiotics, along with azelaic acid can impede the development of the bacteria, reducing the ugly inflammation that characterizes acne.

Comedones, which are the compromised hair follicles, plugged with dead cells and sebum, that cause blackheads, which penetrate the surface of the skin, and whiteheads, which operate at semi-surface levels. They can actually be treated by retinoids, which are Vitamin-A like biochemical formulations, which actually help to unplug comedones, paving the way for topicals, including antibiotics, to enter into the follicles and do their damage. Dermatologists sometimes use the newer retinoids to curtail further comedone development.

In the case of severer forms of acne, dermatologists may prescribe the less physically invasive route of oral medicine. Some common antibiotics, used to curb the development of the P. acnes bacteria and reduce inflammation are doxycycline, tetracycline and minocyclyine. The common topical, benzoyl peroxide, may be used with antibiotics such as sulfur, erythromycin or clindamycin. There can be disturbing side affects to antibiotics, depending on the drug and the individual?s sensitivity. Changes in skin color, an increased propensity for sunburns, dizziness, stomach problems can occur. Tetracycline is contra- indicated in children and pregnant women. The antibiotic route must be taken with caution and with awareness of problems. Substances such as minocycline and tetracycline can even affect the potency of oral birth control methods.

In very serious cases of nodular or cystic acne that seems resistant to treatment, a dermatologist may prescribe isotretinoin or ?Accutane,? a retinoid that might be taken once or twice a day for up to twenty weeks. Oil glands actually can be shrunk by Accutane and there is a marked effect on the growth of bacteria. Its great advantage is that it can prevent scarring and markedly disappears the acne in something like 90 per cent of patients.

The downside of isotretinoin is that it can cause birth defects in an unborn child if it imbibed by a pregnant woman. So woman undergoing this treatment often have two take several forms of birth control to make sure they don?t get pregnant while undergoing therapy.

Are there natural treatments for acne? Alternative medical practitioners recommend such substances as pantothenic acid, a B vitamin, said to combat stress, a factor that aggravates acne, grapeseed extracts and grapefruit seed extracts; various essential fatty acids like primrose or flax seed oil which can allegedly clear the pores of the skin, colloidal silver, said to be a powerful natural antibiotic; tea tree oil soap- whose main active constituent is tea tree oil, said to be made from a natural antibiotic.

Acne Is It Contagious?

Acne is one of the most common disorders that trouble us. Many of us get acne even when we grow up. Acne spoils our looks and affects our confidence. The scars are as bad and make us self-conscious. Can acne be contagious? Should we keep away from acne sufferers?

Acne - is it contagious or not?

For any diseases or condition to be contagious, there has be an agent that is passed on from one person to another. Like in ringworm, where one can pass on the fungus and affect another person. Acne causes have nothing that can be passed on from one person to another. There is nothing that we can catch from others and that will cause acne on our skin.

Acne - Causes

Acne is caused by the excess production of sebum that is hormonal. The gland block that forms and makes the sebum remain inside is only dead skin and is also caused by hormonal and other unknown reasons. The bacteria P.acnes that inflames the acne is found on the skin of all of us. None of these three reasons for causing acne can be passed on. So acne is not contagious.

Complementary and Alternative Acne Treatments

While over-the-counter acne treatments and traditional prescription medications are effective for acne, there are other less traditional ways to treat acne. The following provides a broad overview of 7 complementary and alternative acne treatments.

1. Acupuncture.

Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been practised for several thousand years. In acupuncture, certain points on the body along the channels of energy (called meridian) are stimulated by the insertion of fine needles. Acupuncture apparently helps to restore health by removing blockages in the energy flow in your body. If you have a blockage in the energy flow, you get disease and illness. The use of acupuncture in the treatment of acne has not been scientifically evaluated. There are however, reports that two acupuncture procedures have reduced the symptoms of acne: auricular acupuncture (acupuncture applied to the ear) and electro-acupuncture (acupuncture using a mild electrical current).

2. Herbal medicine.

Some herbs are known to have anti-inflammatory properties and, for that reason, they may be helpful in the treatment of acne. They include Calendula (Calendula officinalis), German chamomile (Matricaria recutita), Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) and flaxseed oil and tea tree oil.

The herbs that help reduce acne inflammation do so by reducing the amount of the P.acnes bacteria produced by the body as a reaction to clogged pores. Tea Tree oil has been favorably compared to benzoyl peroxide in the reduction of P.acnes and is said to have fewer side effects (stinging, itchiness and dry skin).

3. Homeopathic remedies.

Homeopathy refers to a system for treating disease based on the administration of minute doses of a drug. In massive doses, the drug is expected to produce symptoms in healthy individuals similar to those of the disease itself. Homeopathic professionals evaluate the individual (their physical, emotional and intellectual makeup) before prescribing a treatment. While homeopathy has not had the benefit of many scientific studies, professional homeopaths have found that certain homeopathic treatments reduce certain symptoms of acne. Homeopathic remedies include:

Belladonna works best for people who are experiencing ?hot? areas on their face or those who have pus-filled acne blemishes.

Calendula is used to treat pus-filled blemishes or blisters.

Hepar sulphur is useful for pus-filled blemishes that are painful.

Kali bromatum is used for deep acne blemishes, especially those on the forehead.

Silicea is used for deep, pus-filled acne blemishes.

4. Biofeedback and Cognitive Imagery.

Biofeedback and cognitive imagery are relaxation therapies used because emotional stress can have an impact on an acne outbreak. Biofeedback techniques train the individual to control some internal processes such as heart rate and muscle tension. Cognitive imagery (also called guided imagery) involves the use of mental pictures to relax and evoke helpful physical and emotional conditions. Together, when used properly by a person who has mastered the techniques, these methods have been shown to lessen the severity of acne breakouts.

5. Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine originated in India. Ayurveda focuses primarily on diet and lifestyle. Each person, as we all know, is unique and Ayurveda treatments recognize this by tailoring recommendations to the individual.

Ayurvedistic remedies tend to be herbal. In particular, the one Ayurvedic preparation that has proven best for acne relief is a herbal remedy that is called ?Sunder Vati?. This consists of Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Holarrhena antidysenterica and Embelia ribes.

6. Kampo.

Kampo is a Japanese version of traditional, ancient Chinese medicine. A Kampo treatment for acne, the treatment called: Keigai-rengyo-to (TJ-50), has proven effective in some cases. TJ-50 consists of seventeen herbs that have combined anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Among there herbs are: Skullcap root (Scutellaria lateriflora), Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Mint (Mentha arvensis), Angelica root (Angelica archangelica), Peony root (Paeonia lactiflora).

7. Nutrition and Dietary Supplements.

It has been shown that at least as a general proposition, diet has no effect on acne. However, there are many reports from individual acne sufferers that certain drinks or foods (it seems that nuts are particularly suspect) make their acne worse. To be absolutely sure, pay attention to what you eat and try to see if your diet plays an important factor in your acne.

Acid Reflux Symptoms

The typical cause of heartburn or acid reflux is when acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus. If your lower esophageal sphincter is not normal, stomach contents may flow back into your esophagus and cause heartburn. Stomach acid flows into the esophagus (called acid reflux), causing the burning sensation. Acid reflux is caused by stomach spasms which cause acid.

Many believe that acid reflux symptoms affect the heart or mistakenly diagnose acid reflux as a heart related problem. In fact acid reflux has nothing to do with the heart - it is a digestive problem. Indeed for most people, a proper eating habit may help fixing the heartburn problem. Eating high-fiber bread instead of white bread, and exercising for 30 minutes at least once a week, decreased the odds of getting heartburn. Keeping a daily diary for a week can help keep track of specific food items and circumstances related to episodes of heartburn.

One is solution to eliminate acid reflux is to stop smoking. After a meal, when the stomach is full, smoking increases the chances that you will suffer from acid reflux. Loss of weight can also reduce stomach acid reflux. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to heartburn in their third trimester as the growing uterus puts increasing pressure on the stomach.

Here are some easy things that doctors recommend:

Wait at least three hours before going to bed after eating.

Sleep with your head at least 8 higher than your stomach so that gravity can help keep stomach acids from coming up into your esophagus.

Avoid exercising or bending over right after eating.

Eat 5 or 6 small meals a day instead of the three, traditional, big ones.

Acid reflux tends to be more of a problem at night, while you are lying down or sleeping. Having the head and shoulders higher than the stomach lets gravity work to keep acid from refluxing.

If heartburn is a continual or severe problem, it's a good idea to see your doctor. In patients with acid reflux, the heart valve pressure is usually low, which is the root of the problem. Some people have only an occasional acid reflux symptom. For others, however, acid reflux and regurgitation are persistent, chronic symptoms that return several times a week, if not every day.

Medical evaluation of heartburn is recommended for individuals who experience persistent symptoms several times a week. If acid reflux (heartburn) occurs on two or more days per week despite the measures discussed above, you should consult your family doctor. For chronic reflux and heartburn, the doctor may prescribe medications to reduce acid in the stomach.

Facelifts Common Cosmetic Surgery

Facelift or Rhitydectomy is a popular cosmetic surgery where the skin on the face and neck is pulled back to remove wrinkles, sags, jowls etc to give a firm and youthful appearance to the face. As a person ages, the skin on the face gets wrinkled, the jaw line grows slack and jowly. This is due to gravity, sunlight, wear and tear and stress on the facial skin.

In a facelift operation, a local anesthesia or a general anesthesia is given to the patient. Incision starts from the ear to behind the ear and ends near the hairline behind the ear. After the incision, undermining is done. Undermining is separating the facial skin from the underlying tissue below the neck, chin and cheeks using scalpel and scissors.

After undermining the facial suspension system are tightened with stitches. Next the skin is pulled backwards and upwards to the required extent. Then the skin is tightened with stitches. The underlying excess tissue may or may not be removed. The excess skin is removed and the incisions are closed with sutures.

Generally the incision is hidden around the ear and extends to the earlobes and into the hairline. Hence the incision marks are inconspicuous. For a facelift operation a thin skin and good bone structure is ideal. After the facelift operation a windswept look to the face is common. In men the side burns turn backwards giving an unnatural appearance. In women the earlobe is pulled downwards. Facelifts are generally combined with other operations like eye surgery (blepharoplasty) and skin tissue resurfacing with lasers.

Before undergoing facelift operation, the patients are advised to stop smoking and drinking at least a month in advance. Growing longer hair is better to hide the incision scars. Recovery takes up to a month but most patients generally goes back home within a day. Sometimes tubes are attached under the skin to drain out excess fluid for a day or two.

There can be complications like bleeding, damage to facial nerve, necrosis (death of skin), hair loss near the incision. The risk of post-operation complications is higher in case of patients with diabetes, hypertension, smokers etc. However they are not common.

Patients should not take aspirin or anticoagulants before surgery. Further patients should discuss all their medical history and whether they are under any medication with the plastic surgeon.

In the US it is desirable to be treated by a surgeon who belongs to association of plastic surgeon (AAPS) or any other national association. However all qualified surgeons are authorized to make a facelift operation. Results vary from subtle to dramatic depending upon the appearance of the patient before operation.

Is There a Good Home Treatment for Acne?

Acne isn't an isolated problem. In fact it happens to many of us... and for some of us, acne problems could get so bad it would be embarrassing to show our faces in public, even to go to the doctor's office! This is just one of the many reasons why people would willingly buy into the concept of a good home treatment for acne.

Well, there are certainly home remedies for acne, but they aren't miracle cures; how they work will depend on the person's skin type, lifestyle, and the nature of the acne problem. Some acne problems may have deeper roots and need the guidance of a doctor. But for a lot of us, acne problems could be solved by a number of very simple things we could do everyday. You can get a good over the counter home treatment for acne at a good price!

If you want to look into items that you can buy in drugstores, salicylic acid products are a good place to start. Many dermatologists will recommend this for ordinary skin problems. A skin care product that has two percent salicylic acid content should help speed up the healing process of your skin.

But a lot of times, you can make up home remedies from stuff you can buy at the grocery. For example, water. Did you know that drinking lots of water regularly can help clear up a lot of skin problems? A lot of times, skin disorders like acne are brought about by the buildup of toxins under the skin and in the pores. Lack of sleep helps this buildup along, and teenagers often find themselves staying up late for one reason or another.

In fact, teenagers are the most common victims of acne and other skin-diseases. Another reason for this is that skin diseases may be triggered by hormone imbalance. Pregnant women also suffer from skin diseases because of this. Thankfully, it's a temporary setup and either it passes or is outgrown soon.

You should also know that you can make a home treatment for acne even out of grocery-bought products. A mask made of cooked oatmeal can be allowed to sit on the face for 15 minutes - this helps in relieving acne. Aloe and witch hazel are also two popular herbal products that can cure acne. You can also stay out in the sun for a bit - the ultraviolet rays of the sun may be an effective natural laser treatment.

Acneteam.com provides you with information on a wide range of acne related issues, such as home treatment for acne and much more.

Can Antioxidants Improve Skin Care?

For most issues related to teenagers, fads rule the roost. And skin care issues are highest among teenager. Today any medium, be it magazines, newspapers, television or the Internet are inundated with skin care related articles. These articles could include various therapies and homemade solutions for skin care. Ranging from the totally natural to those which involve chemicals, these articles provide the reader with the much needed solutions to their skin related problems.

These days the latest craze in skin care regimes is natural antioxidant skin care. The belief that is being popularized these days is that the more natural the product being used the more effective and devoid of side effects it will be. This concept has a strong historical background since it is a known fact that queens and princesses of the ages gone by used natural extracts of plants like hibiscus and olive to keep their skin glowing and youthful. Over time man has processed these very elements and made them available to the common man in the form of tubes, bottles and cans containing moisturizers, creams, shampoos and anti-ageing gels. These contain the richness of the abundant health secrets hidden in the flora and fauna of the jungles. The only difference is that they are more likely to have been processed in a research laboratory and tested before being presented to you for use.

These distilled ingredients used to keep a healthy body are being called nutriceuticals. This new addition to the dictionary is made up of the words ?nutrients? and pharmaceutical?.

Most companies which make skin care related products tout the goodness of antioxidants and natural products that contain antioxidants. An antioxidant is something that destroys the harmful oxygen free radicals. These free radicals could be a product of normal functioning of the body or could be generated due to external factors like ultraviolet rays from the sun.

Though the concept of free radicals is extremely complicated to explain, suffice it to know that these radicals can be harmful and can result in mutation in genes. Mutation can lead to skin cancer and make the individual incapable of repairing the damage done to the skin. With antioxidants we can limit the number of free radicals in our system, thereby ensuring that we not only keep our skin supple and glowing but also healthy. This wonderful discovery of how antioxidants can work to negate the effect of free radicals had led to fantastic products which can help in tackling issues related to ageing skin. Problems like wrinkles, spots, pigmentation and small growths can be resolved with increasing the amount of antioxidants in your diet and oral application of antioxidant concentrates.
