Take Charge of Your Natural Health and Wellness

When I was a teenager, I was involved in a serious car accident that left me in a coma. In the hours, days, and weeks that followed, I was kept alive by a vast array of sophisticated medical technologies, high-precision devices, and advanced western pharmaceutical treatments. Fortunately, that was precisely what my body needed following my near-fatal accident. And that is precisely what conventional Western medicine does best -- keeps bodies functioning in the face of acute trauma, life-threatening illnesses, or severe accidents.

During my post-coma rehabilitation, I had to relearn everything. Literally. While other teens were learning how to drive, I was re-learning how to walk, how to talk, how to read and write and dress myself. During that time, I began to question the role of conventional medicine in my recovery. While Western medicine had done a great job of keeping my body alive during the crisis phase following my accident, I didn't feel it was as effective in the rehabilitation phase. In fact, I felt that Western medical treatment sometimes produced adverse side effects that impeded my progress towards whole body health.

In Search of Natural Health and Wellness Alternatives

That's when my interest in alternative forms of healing first took root. As a young adult, I researched and experienced a wide range of alternative healing modalities: Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and Ayurvedic medicine were just some of the ancient medical systems I explored as I blazed my own trail towards natural health and wellness. I also experimented with and integrated meditation, a healthy diet, and yoga into my bag of natural health tricks. Ultimately, though, the medical science that made the most sense for my health was homeopathy.

Contemporary Western homeopathic medicine was developed by an 18th-century German physician, chemist, and scholar named Samuel Hahnemann. Dr. Hahnemann?s approach has been tested, refined, and successfully practiced all over the world for well over 200 years.

Homeopathic Medicine: Stimulates the Body's Natural Healing Mechanisms

In the book Healing with Homeopathy, Wayne B. Jonas, MD defines homeopathy as ?a system of medicine that uses specially prepared, highly dilute substances to induce the body's self-healing mechanisms in a comprehensive manner. Known as remedies, these homeopathic drugs are derived from a variety of plants, animals, and minerals. Dr. Jonas further explains that the goal of homeopathy is to stimulate natural healing mechanisms inherent in the body and guide them to eliminate the illness.

That's what first intrigued me about homeopathy: the fact that very small doses of homeopathic drugs could stimulate my body to heal itself. To me, that made total sense. I had seen my body's intelligence in action as it worked to recover from the accident. And I wanted to support and promote that intelligence. So I began working with a licensed homeopath as part of my personal healing process. And I became stronger and healthier and felt more in control of my own health than I had ever felt before. Many years later, I am convinced that if my body can eliminate a disease on its own, it is more likely to remain healthy and grow even stronger because I allowed it to cure the problem using its own intelligence and internal systems.

Homeopathic medicine can help treat many acute and chronic problems -- from arthritis, sore muscles, and PMS to fibromyalgia, gout, prostate disorders, and countless other physical and emotional ailments. It is also extremely helpful when integrated with conventional medical treatments. For instance, a study described in Palliative Medicine (2002, vol. 16, no. 3) cites evidence that homeopathic remedies help alleviate pain and fatigue in patients who are undergoing conventional cancer treatments.

Blaze Your Own Trail to Natural Health

These days, homeopathy forms the foundation of my family's approach to healthcare. Yet we integrate conventional medicine, herbs, diet and exercise, chiropractic, and other healing modalities into our ongoing medical repertory. Because we take self-responsibility for our health, we work to stay on top of current health trends. We discuss health treatment options with our homeopath. We pay attention to how our bodies react as we introduce remedies or other treatments. As a result, we are often able to treat ourselves, which helps to keep our healthcare costs down. And when we do need to visit our homeopath, we can participate in our own healthcare because we are aware of our bodies and our options.

I invite you to explore the many options available to you that will support your quest for natural health and wellness. To begin, you may want to find a homeopathic practitioner in your area. Here are three good places to start:

Hypnosis: Five Things You Might Not Have Realised Hypnosis Can Do For You

When hypnosis is mentioned the first thought is usually about entertainment and people looking foolish on stage. The second thought is usually about smoking, and if there were any enthusiasm left for a third thought that would probably be about weight loss. These are the areas that hypnosis is associated with in the minds of most people.

And this is a real shame because hypnosis is a powerful tool for positive personal growth. It is a powerful tool that can make life much, much easier. Whenever people come to see me for help it is invariably because they've tried everything else and everything else (usually the world of medicine) has failed them. After treatment they frequently express the wish that they'd come to see me first.

The real problem is that since hypnosis is known primarily through its use for entertainment ? it's value is not appreciated in all the other areas where it can bring about great benefits.

So what exactly can hypnosis do for you?

It can change your life, and:

1. Help you achieve success
2. Take you into a past-life
3. Heal disease
4. Reduce pain
5. Improve sporting performance

1. Achieve Success

Success is the thing most of us want. You can only want it if you don't believe you have it. But success isn't a thing, it's a feeling and hypnosis can help you feel successful. Now what use is that to me? You may be asking yourself. I've got bills to pay, I'd like a new car, or to visit family on the other side of the world. I want to run my own company, be the best at what I do?

These are tangibles. And, surprisingly hypnosis can help you to achieve these things too. It works on the basis of the idea that if you are not moving in the direction of what you want, then that is because there are subconscious blocks. In other words there is subconscious resistance that sabotages your attempts to achieve your goals in life. Because hypnosis works, primarily, by re-programming the subconscious, it can be utilised to bring the subconscious into alignment with the conscious and free you to move easily towards the achievements you desire.

2. Past-Life Regression

Belief in reincarnation is not necessary in order to experience a past-life under hypnotic regression. Hypnosis is a wonderful way to re-experience past-life memories comfortably. If you've heard just three too many people who were all Cleopatra, or other equally famous historical characters, then like me, you'd probably be more than a little sceptical. But, under hypnotic regression, most people experience mundane ordinary past lives ? like, farmers or soldiers, or merchants, or servants? My first past-life experience was as a Spanish Inquisitor, my second as a Roman soldier being killed in battle, my third as a tribal chieftain in ancient Britain, and the fourth one as a poor French farmer. So why would anyone want to go back to experience a life that, in essence, isn't romantic or exciting or special? What value is it? No matter how 'mundane' the life experienced - that life is special.

To re-experience memories of a time in history that you know nothing, or very little, about, is of itself a source of fascination when those memories are experienced by you. The experience makes it real for you. It can't fail to enhance your current life when you know, without doubt now, that your consciousness continues on after your body ceases to function. It means there is no Hell ? other than the one you make for yourself on planet Earth. If you engage in a series of regressions you will notice patterns in your behaviours and those of the people who are in those other lives with you. Becoming aware of these patterns can help you to free yourself from problems in this current life.

3. Heal disease.

Wow! There's a claim. Even doctors would have difficulty demonstrating they could do that. If hypnosis can heal disease why isn't everybody using it all the time? Hypnosis isn't what does the healing. The person with the disease does the healing themselves. What hypnosis does is make that process easier and more accessible. It isn't guaranteed, but then neither is any medical treatment. Oncologist O. Carl Simonton was one of the pioneers of the use of hypnosis to visualise a powerful immune system destroying weak cancer cells. This technique can be used with any disease process.

4. Reduce pain.

Minds are powerful things, but most of the power is lost because the mind isn't focused. There are several hypnotic techniques that can be used to reduce pain by training the mind to respond differently to the signals it interprets as pain. This can result in a reduction in the pain, or its removal. If you want to go further you can use hypnosis to explore the psychological reasons for the presence of the pain. This has the potential to bring about a release that results in healing.

5. Improve Sporting performance.

Whatever sporting activity you enjoy, professionally, or for fun ? hypnosis can help you to improve your game - as long as you have the physical ability and fitness to perform at the level you desire. (If you haven't hypnosis can be used to motivate you to achieve that). Hypnosis can be used to focus the mind, to visualise success, to avoid distractions, and to instil the muscle-memory that allows you to act faster than thought.

So you see, hypnosis is a valuable tool that allows you to become who you really are, freed from the burdens that hold you back and prevent you from living your life to the full.

People Ask Which is the Best Natural Pain Remedy?

If one searches the web looking for the right natural pain relief, it is likely to get a bit confusing as there are about 2,630,000 web pages to chose from. When people search the web for products or services they seldom search all the pages to decide which they are going to use. With that many pages on natural pain relief they could spend a lifetime reading before deciding on the right one for them.

Not all pain is the same and internal organ pain and external muscular or joint pain need different approaches. Internal organ pain needs a doctor's opinion to make quite sure that it isn't something serious like a cancer, which, in turn, would need a totally different treatment regimen.

Muscle or joint and ligament pain on the other hand respond to a number of other topical methods of treatment. The old stand by of heat and ice alternately still work well, but new developments like a natural spray made exclusively of natural ingredients has a much quicker result and with continued use often handles the pain permanently.

Pain can cause a dramatic lowering in our quality of life. Finding effective relief makes all the difference. With so many advertisements for pain remedies on TV and magazines, we often take the easy way out and use off-the-shelf products that every grocery store stocks, ignoring the side effects that many of these products can cause.

With a little patience and fortitude it is possible to find a natural pain remedy that will do the job of relieving the pain and not affect us detrimentally.

Many years of research and study into alternatives to prescription drugs paid off, said Judy Cutler, a well known nutritionist based in Southern California. We formulated a spray we called 'Naturally Painless' that gives perfect natural pain relief without any of the side effects that many of the prescription drugs have. The best part of our day is opening the 'thank you' letters from seniors, athletes, and people from all walks of life who have at last found a natural pain remedy that works for them.

Adult Acne Treatments! Adults Are Searching For Quality Treatments And It All Starts With A System

However, if you had clear skin as a teen, and now that your body is changing due to hormones or pregnancy, you may suddenly experience a change in your complexion and may not know exactly how to handle the new changes in your skin.

When your pimple breakouts occur, if you notice you're getting an increase in blackheads and whiteheads in combination to excess blemishes, try to think back and remember how your skin has been in the past. If your skin was clear due to good eating habits, low stress levels, and you were getting at least 8 hours or more of sleep prior to getting your adult acne, then that's the first place you want to start.

For example: As a teenager, if you slept more than eight hours a day, drank plenty of water, and you ate more vegetables and fruit, and now as an adult you only get 4 hours of sleep, you drink less water, and you?re not eating the same level of fruits and veggies, then you may want to adjust these areas first. If you change these habits, and notice no change, you then have to go to the next step, and make an appointment to see a dermatologist.

When All Else Fails, Visit A Dermatologist To Get The Bottom Of Your Adult Acne Issues!

If you can?t figure out why you?re still having skin problems after you made necessary internal lifestyle changes, then you should see the skin professionals to find out what?s causing your stubborn adult zits, and you may be enlightened once you visit your local dermatologist.

Depending on the severity of your skin condition, you may soon find out the condition you have is caused by several circumstances. For women, acne and increased blemishes can be easily caused by hormonal changes due to pregnancy. A woman that is pregnant will have to look at alternative safe skin programs, and natural skin products would be a place to start. Women with hormonal changes that are not currently going through a pregnancy can look at other options such as oral acne medication or antibiotics, but keep in mind that this method should not be a long-term solution, so if you can avoid internal medication, look at other alternatives.

Men are somewhat different, and in most cases, increased acne causing a blemished complexion could be the lack of facial care, or mental stress in your life. For men in general, a good blemish cleansing and facial exfoliating routine combined with a healthy diet are the first steps to follow; however, we encourage that men see a skin doctor to assess their adult skin problems.

Acne and aging is a complex situation, and there is never one solution to every individual adult suffering from pimple breakouts. There are many contributing factors such as your body?s changes during puberty, and for women, even the type of cosmetics you may be applying to your face. Your facial skin consists of thousands of pores, follicles, skin and oil. Any negative balance, and you have a recipe for facial infections, plus outbreaks that can lead to many skin imperfections and severe scarring for a very long time.

We touched briefly on what may contribute to your adult acne, and some of the changes that may be occuring in your body internally and also externally. Now, to find out how you can start a program to eliminate your adult blemish problem:

I encourage you to read our article on ?Adult Acne Treatment?, where I break down some of the top adult acne systems that target stubborn facial and body acne.

Strengthen Your Immune System With Natural Health

With the ever increasing threat of newer and deadlier diseases everyday, it is more important now than ever before to keep your body healthy and strong so that you can fight these terrible diseases. And the best way perhaps to do that is to strengthen your immune system. By strengthening your immune system, you can ensure that it has the ability to carry out the following tasks effectively.

  • Safeguard your body from harmful microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, parasites, viruses, etc, which invade your body and cause it to deteriorate.
  • Free your body of foreign elements such as dust mites, pollen, dirt etc.
  • Rid your body of deadly cancer cells, which can often be fatal.
  • Thus, in order to ensure that your immune system is able to perform these roles to optimum capacity, it is essential to strengthen it.

Most people are unaware of the fact that by simply strengthening your immune system, you can increase the immunity of your body towards foreign pathogens and can protect yourself from deadly illnesses. And yes, even if your immunity is very weak, it is entirely possible to strengthen your immune system and thus your whole body. But before we talk of how to make your immune system stronger, let's take a look at what causes your immune system to become weak.

There are several factors which weaken your immune system such as increased stress levels, poor dietary habits, adrenal fatigue, increased blood sugar, toxins, dysbiosis of the gastro-intestinal tract, and reduction of essential enzymes. Hence, to make your immune system stronger, you have to address all these factors, which can be done by:

  • Maintaining optimum nutrition
  • Undertaking stress relief measures
  • Detoxifying your body
  • Ensuring proper blood sugar levels
  • Restoring adrenal equilibrium
  • Boosting essential bodily enzymes
  • Using natural health supplements for increasing immunity
  • Restoring your digestive health
  • It is important to determine what is causing your immune system to become weak and then taking the necessary measures to strengthen your immune system. Although you can choose to become healthier on your own, it is best to consult with a qualified natural health care practitioner, as there are various factors to be considered to achieve a stronger immune system, as is evident from the above. By working with an alternative medical doctor, you can rest assured that all your health problems will be taken care of with the right combination of natural therapies and pharmaceutical drugs (if required), so as to achieve the strongest immunity possible.

Chakras: The Subtle Energies of the Body

The subtle energies of the body, Polarity Therapy,
    Tantra and cultivating sexual energy

Empirical science has yet to prove the existence of the subtle anatomies. Yet the mystical traditions have articulated them for millennium. The Sepherot of the Kaballistic Tree of Life, the meridians of the Chinese acupuncture system and the chakras of the Ayurvedic system are examples. They all convey the knowledge of a subtle energy which they assert is the link between the spiritual realms and life as we know it. Each uses their unique language and concepts to describe the precipitation of the mind of God into energy and into physical manifestation. The Chinese call this energy ?chi?, ?ki? by the Japanese and ?prana? by the Hindus. The Kahunas of Hawaii call it ?mana?; Christ called it ?light?.

The system of Ayurvedic medicine has evolved over the past 5,000 years. It is based on the Hindu scriptural Veda?s, which are the world?s oldest documented spiritual writings. Ayurveda offers a highly specific description of the subtle anatomy. It recognizes five sheaths, or layers of energy through the body. They are described from the most dense to the most subtle. The first and outer most layer is the bones, muscle and skin. The next, more, subtle sheath is respiration. Next in subtlety is the sheath of cognition, associated with the nervous system and the thinking mind. Next is the sheath of discretion, which relates to our moral choices and their consequences. Most subtle of all is the chakra system; the interface between the cosmic vibrations of creation and the grosser anatomical systems of the physical body.

Chakra, from the Sanskrit, means ?wheel of spinning light.? The ancients taught there are seven chakras in the body. They are located just in front of and along the spinal column. These generators and reservoirs of energy are also areas of consciousness. The first five chakras are associated with an element of nature (earth, water, fire, air, or ether) and with one of the senses (smell, taste, sight, touch and hearing). All of the chakras are associated with a tonal quality, a numerical and alphabetical value, and a color. When the chakras are in tune the body, mind and spirit experience harmony. Charles and Caroline Muir offer an analogy:

Consider the chakras as the strings of a guitar. Each string vibrates at a different frequency and gives off a different note. Over time the strings may resonate sharp or flat, and they require tuning. When they are in tune, the sound the guitar produces is harmonious. Similarly, when the chakras are in tune, one achieves harmony.

The Base chakra is found at the coccyx bone at the tip of the spine. It resonates with the earth element, the adrenal glands of the endocrine system and the sense of smell. It rules the organs of structure such as bones, muscles, and connective tissues as well as elimination. There is a correlation between the earth element and our need for structure and safety in the world.

The second chakra is found at the sacrum. It resonates with the water element, the reproductive glands and the sense of taste. It rules the fluids of the body such as blood, lymph, sexual secretions and tears. It correlates to sexuality and all creative energies. There is an interesting link between the sense of taste and sexuality in this chakra. Mantak Chia, in his book Taoist Secrets of Love, states:

Many people confuse the hunger for food and sex as being similar biological desires that are both necessary for survival. Clearly they are connected, as many people feeling sexual frustration turn to food for gratification. An imbalance in ching (sex) energy ranks as a major cause of obesity---when you are sexually frustrated, food is the easiest substitute.

The third chakra is found at the solar plexus. It resonates with the fire element, the Isle?s of Langerhan (which produce insulin in the pancreas) and the sense of sight. It rules the organs of digestion and metabolism. This chakra correlates to the assertion of and the abuse of power.

The fourth chakra is found at the heart. This is the center for the Air element, the thymus gland and the sense of touch. The heart chakra rules respiration and immunity. With the arms it addresses how we bring the world to us and how we share ourselves with the world. It correlates to a sense of altruistic love in the world.

The fifth chakra is found at the throat. It rules the Ether element, the thyroid and para-thyroid glands, the organs of speech and the sense of hearing. The throat chakra correlates to ?speaking one?s truth? and to taking action based on that truth.

The last two chakras transcend the denser elements and senses. These are the subtlest energetic harmonics.

The sixth chakra, often called the 3rd eye, is found between the eye brows. It relates to the 6th sense of psychic and paranormal experience. It is associated with the pituitary gland of the endocrine system and is the source of spiritual vision.

The Crown Chakra is found at the top of the head and it relates to the pineal gland. This is the seat of mystical experience. It is the place where the mind releases all boundaries and concepts and experiences life in its full unity. There are a number of energy therapy systems such as Reiki and Therapeutic Touch. In my own journey I have found Polarity Therapy to be the most effective way to effect the chakra energy system. Polarity Therapy is the life?s work and teachings of Dr. Randolph Stone. Dr. Stone was a doctor of osteopathy, a doctor of naturopathy and a chiropractor. He would treat clients for symptoms and then notice that they returned with the same chronic pains and illnesses. As well trained as he was he felt he was missing something. His curiosity led him to study mystical healing modalities across the world. Richard Gordon describes Dr. Stone?s search:

In China and France he studied acupuncture and herbology. In the orient, he learned reflexology and other eastern massage techniques. In the course of his work, he stumbled across the ancient Spagyric art of healing as taught by the great Doctor Paracelsus von Hohenheim, who had studied in Arabia. This provided Dr. Stone with essential knowledge of subtle electromagnetic fields of the body. Over the course of sixty years, Dr. Stone integrated this wealth of knowledge into a system he named Polarity Therapy.

Dr. Stone realized that successful healing must take place on the energetic fields as well as the physical level. That?s why chronic pain and illness often return when treatments just address the physical symptoms. Polarity utilizes gentle touch, rocking and deep pressure point work to release blocked energy in the energy fields. Dr. Robert K. Hall, MD teaches it this way: the work calls forth the spirit found at the very core of an individual. The essence of that core is Love. To experience true healing all the trauma and fear that is layered over that core of love must come out. That?s what we at the Lomi School call ?working through the body.? Many therapeutic models do their work ?on? a body, or something you ?do? to people. Working through the body calls forth the very essence of spirit.

    Cultivating sexual energy

The Eastern traditions recognize that sexual energy can be a potent source of spiritual energy. The Kaballist?s have their ?Sex Magic,? the Taoists have their erotic rituals and the East Indians and Tibetans have Tantra. Tantra is the art and science of cultivating sexual energy and directing it to spiritual transformation. Deepak Chopra says,

?Tantra is the closest you can get to magic or alchemy or transmutation. Tantric rituals are basically spiritual disciplines that allow you to trap and transform power. When properly understood, tantra is one of the most dynamic and consistent paths to enlightenment. Of course, sexuality is a component of it. Tantra acknowledges that sexual energy is the most powerful energy in the universe because it is the creative energy in the universe.?

I think exploring the concepts and practices of Erotic rituals are important for westerners. We have a deep sexual wounding from our Judeo-Christian heritage. Our sexual natures were first denied when Adam and Eve ?saw their nakedness? as they were evicted from the Garden of Eden. The teaching of original sin is a body centered, sexual one. Erotic rituals teach us to hold our bodies as sacred. To experience sexual energy as the cosmic creative gift that it is.

A primary key in Tantra is an ability to be present with your partner; to focus with eye-contact, to match the rhythms of the breath, or meditate together. Tantra also teaches the importance of mastering the orgasm. Women have four levels of orgasm: the clitoral orgasm, the vaginal orgasm, multiple orgasms and the amrita, or divine nectar. Men are taught to master ejaculation. Rather than lose their sexual energy out through the penis the orgasmic energy is directed up the chakras. Thus men become capable of multiple orgasms.

Tantric rituals are most effective in committed long-term relationships. The defenses and barriers of our personality are healed in the safety, intensity and intimacy of our primary relationships. My friend Sean Michael used to say, ?Intimacy means In-To-Me- See.? Keith Hennessy defines intimacy as, ?An un-armed encounter between two individuals.? Both of these describe the expression of a self without the armor of defenses, a vulnerability of just being with another person. Commitment is needed to create the container that allows all the personality defenses to present themselves. Safety and vulnerability come as those defenses are consciously healed. Mastering erotic energy has two primary results. As the art of love making it creates ecstatic satisfaction. It also generates intense energy for healing on all levels of body, mind and spirit.

As a teacher and a professional body-worker, I think it wise to add: a spiritual and body-centered transformation can be a personal journey and/or work with a teacher or professional. The practices that involve a teacher, a therapist or facilitator are not to be used for cultivating sexual energy. Healthy, consensual sex is defined as sex between two individuals who share an equal balance of power. This excludes professional relationships such as Doctor/Psychotherapist and patients, Lawyer/Massage therapist and clients, or teachers and students. Sex between a client and professional is abusive. Erotic rituals invoke powerful energetic experiences. Utilized unconsciously they negatively effect relationships and spiritual evolution.

    Save Yourself From Lung Cancer!

Lung cancer is a very serious form of cancer. This is lethal especially when the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lungs has already spread to the other organs in the body.

Cancerous cells can break down and can spread in other parts of the body by forming secondary tumor sites, which makes it more fatal.

When the tumor is already on its advanced stage, managing it is somewhat harder. It may help to know that early detection of lung cancer is best to ensure the possibility of putting the lung cancer into remission.

If early detection of lung cancer did not happen, diagnosis in the advanced stage may be harder and managing the symptoms may likewise be too difficult.

Lung cancer treatment is greatly dependent on the severity of the disease. Knowing which type of lung cancer you are suffering from may help in the management of the disease.

There are two types of lung cancer, the small cell lung cancer and the non-small cell lung cancer.

Small cell lung cancer or oat cell lung cancer comprises the twenty to twenty-five percent of all lung cancer cases. The major cause of small cell lung cancer is cigarette smoking.

Commonly, because lung cancer symptoms do not manifest in the early stage of the disease, treating it will be a big problem especially when detection happens when cancer metastases or secondary cancer cells already developed in the other organs of the body.

Non-small cell lung cancer, on the other hand, involves several kinds of lung cancers. The differentiation of these kinds of non-small cell lung cancer depends on the type of cells affected.

Three common types of non-small cell lung cancer are squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.

These forms of non-small cell lung cancer tend to grow and spread slower than the small cell lung cancer.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common non-small cell lung cancer. This non-small cell lung cancer starts in the large bronchi and stay confined to the chest longer than other lung cancers do, because of this, the cancer do not spread as rapidly than the other types.

Adenocarcinoma, the primary cause of this non-small cell lung cancer is still a challenge to medical experts. Thus, experts continue to study the major cause of this cancer. Even with this pending study, cigarette smoking and breathing impure air is still being considered as major participant in the development of lung cancer.

Doctors believe that the tumor in this type of lung cancer is in the outer edges of the lungs and under the lining of the bronchi. The progression of this non-small cell lung cancer is average but survival odds remain on the 10% mark.

Adenocarcinoma constitutes thirty to thirty-five percent of all lung cancer cases in America.

Large cell lung cancer is another non-small cell lung cancer. The tumor in this type of lung cancer is on the smaller bronchi. Fifteen percent of lung cancer cases are large cell lung cancers.

Among all non-small cell lung cancers, this type of lung cancer progresses faster, almost to the level of small cell lung cancer.

Lung cancer cases account for the fourteen percent of all cancer cases in the United States. At worst, twenty-eight percent of all death among cancer patients are lung cancer cases.

To avoid being part of the statistics on lung cancer, ensure you will not acquire small cell lung cancer or even the slower non-small cell lung cancer by living a healthy and active lifestyle.

Regular exercise, eating a well-balanced diet and avoiding exposure to impure air including cigarette smoke will help strengthen your immune system and this will avoid acquiring the deadly disease.

A Simple Urine Test Can Early Detect Prostate Cancer

Human cells grow all the time. This is a specific way the body replaces useless cells with new ones. The new cells remain on the same tissue of organ, assuming the same function as the old ones. This is a controlled growing targeting the body development process.

Sometime the cells begin to grow out of control and form a mass called tumor. Tumors are cancerous only if they are malignant. This means due of uncontrolled growth they leave the 'parental' place and invade nearby tissues or spread throughout the body.

Prostate cancer happens when cells in prostate begin to multiply out of control and leave the prostate gland.

Treatment for prostate cancer may vary according to the stage of the cancer. Regular screening for prostate cancer can help in early diagnoses and in treatment effectiveness.

The most usual screening is done by routine yearly digital rectal examinations (DRE) beginning at age 40. The procedure involves a gloved finger in the rectum for a measurement of the size of the gland and feel for possible prostate tumor (nodule) cancer.

In addition, beginning at age 50, an annual PSA test is necessary because it is substantially more sensitive for men health than DRE when it comes to detecting early, tiny, or even microscopic cancers that are confined to the prostate gland.

But in many cases PSA testing is irrelevant as many men with normal test results are prostate cancer sufferers. Recent studies have found that a simple urine test may improve the diagnosis and treatment of this male disease. Urine screening can reveal the presence of thymosin ?15, a protein that sustain malignum tumor development by stimulating cell migration. This protein is produced almost exclusively by cancerous cells and it is detectable in urine.

    Types of Acne

Acne comes in many forms. Although most commonly found on the face, acne ranges from Mild to Severe and can be located anywhere on the body. Most frequently self-treated, mild cases are manageable. However, severe cases should be treated under the supervision of health professionals, such as dermatologists.

Acne Vulgaris, translated as ?common acne,? is the most common type of acne. It is better known as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules or cysts.

Blackheads - Occur in partially blocked pores. Dead skin cells, bacteria, and sebum (the substance that causes oily skin) drain to the surface of the skin; the pigments are exposed to air, which causes the black color. Blackheads can take a long time to clear up.

Whiteheads ? Contained beneath the surface of the skin, the trapped sebum, dead cells and bacteria are completely blocked in the pores.

Pustules ? With the appearance of a red circle with a white or yellow center, this form of acne is more often called Pimples or Zits.

Nodules ? Much larger than other forms of acne, nodules form hard lumps beneath the surface of the skin which can be painful and last for several months. Highly susceptible to scarring, this form of acne is recommended to be treated by a dermatologist.

Cysts ? Similar to a nodule, this form of acne is filled with pus. Like nodules, cysts can be very painful and lead to scarring if untreated. Cysts should be treated by a dermatologist.

Acne Conglobata ? More common in males than females, this rare form of acne vulgaris is extremely disfiguring. Large lesions form on the face, chest, back, buttocks, upper arms, and thighs, sometimes accompanied by numerous blackheads. Acne Conglobata can cause severe psychological as well as physical suffering, damage to the skin and permanent scarring. This condition can last several years.

Acne Fulminans ? A sudden case of Acne Conglobata, with a fever and aching joints. Generally treated with oral steroids.

Gram-Negative Folliculitis ? A bacterial infection which causes pustules and cysts, this form of acne may be caused by long-term treatment of acne with antibiotics.

Pyoderma Faciale ? Affecting only females usually between ages 20 and 40, most commonly in women who never had acne before, this type of acne consists of painful pustules, cysts and nodules on the face. Permanent scarring is potential. Generally clears up within a year.

Acne Rosacea ? Notably affecting people over the age of 30, Acne Rosacea causes a red rash on the face. Pimples or other skin blemishes may also be present. This should not be confused with Acne Vulgaris as there are two different treatments for these types. Acne Rosacea occurs more frequently in women than men but is more severe in the men it affects.

The Healing Arts: Head Hands and Heart: Part One A Paramedic's Journey

I?ve had a simple concept grip me with such power that I?ve spent more than thirty years of my life exploring its many facets. Oddly enough, I didn?t know how to put words to it until just a few years ago. It has to do with learning how to be a Healer as opposed to what I call being a Flesh Mechanic.

The start of this journey took place in the back of an ambulance. I was on the first wave of Mobile Intensive Care Unit Paramedics in the country during the ?70?s and ?80?s. I began my 12-year career as an Emergency Medical Technician (a basic level of emergency care delivery). We used to proudly say that we worked with our ?Head, Hands, and Heart.? No truer words were ever spoken! These three, besides a limited array of bandages and splints, a cylinder of oxygen and a converted V-8, Cadillac Hearse, were all we had to use. The goal: Get the patient to the hospital as fast as possible, preferably alive.

Improvisation was a necessity. In serious cases, I?d run through my bag of tricks so quickly that all I had left to give was my self. Sometimes the only thing that seemed to stand between death and my patient was my desire that the patient live. I can?t count the intense moments I spent unassisted in the back of a careening ambulance doing cardiac compressions and giving mouth to mouth resuscitation (there were no face masks in use back then)?essentially breathing for and being the heartbeat of the person?for a breakneck ride to the hospital. Can you imagine a more intimate period of time with a human being than this?

Something strange would happen to me when my sense of compassion was ignited. I would simply know what to do. Something as simple as a gesture by my patient would be so familiar to me, so human, that?just for an instant?the ?difference? between my patient and me would dissolve. From that moment until I dropped off the patient at the hospital, I moved from someplace centered inside my chest, and my actions felt spontaneous. At the time, I was aware of the difference between acting from the heart and acting from the head, though not able to articulate it.

Once I started to fill my head with the therapies and procedures, drugs and techniques that are the stock in trade of the paramedic, however, I found myself turning into a superb ?Flesh Mechanic.? Focused on the delivery of care, it became easy for me to distance myself from the experience of being a human being with a human being in need. There was an almost imperceptible coldness growing in me. The tradeoff was convenience and comfort?I didn?t have to be affected so deeply, so personally. If the patient died, I could say, ?Well, the drugs didn?t work.?

This led me to a choice point, though, because I could feel myself losing my humanity. As I looked around me at my peers, from fellow EMT's through the heads of the hospitals I worked at, I saw the same creeping coldness take shape and stick. I was pulling away from the loop of connection that is so vital to the healing process. The more distant I became from my experience, the more my own life force seeped out of me. On the other hand, at times confusingly so, being invested completely in the moment with a person in need also provided a healing for ME.

I kept getting hints and tips to remind me there were different ways to work than being lost within the mechanistic process that was beginning to feel so empty to me. One call after another would come during a forty-eight hour shift, each more challenging and perhaps ?insane? than the one before it. After having no sleep for 36 hours or so I?d find myself in the middle of a complex incident where everything was going wrong. Overwhelmed, and not having a clue as to what to do next, internally, I?d throw my hands up in despair, and ?surrender? to Whatever it was that created me, my patients and the situation.

In those moments, something else seemed to take over. Completely. I would literally feel my consciousness shift from my head to my heart. I found myself in the midst of the moment, with all my heart, for that was all I had left. It was as if I could see with all of me, rather than just my eyes. I would move from my ?center? rather than in response to a thought process. There appeared to be no brain involved, no lag time, between perceiving something needing to be done and doing it. Miracles would truly come through me.

At the time, I wasn?t really aware of how one piece fit into another. Those experiences, however, prompted me to begin investing more and more of my time being as present as I could, in each moment, with my patients. I found that I could increase the odds of my being effective on a call by taking time to prepare and open myself to just deal with each moment as it unfolded. Rather than thinking about the technical approaches I could use, I began to take the situation in from a deeper place, and then do just what was necessary. I?d spend the rest of my time being with rather than doing to. I discovered so many of my actions became intuitive rather than ?logical?.

I recognized something important: preparation, and connection to myself and the moment and the patient really IS the essence of healing, and something in the heart makes it happen.

    Pericardial Mesothelioma FAQ

    What is pericardial mesothelioma?

Pericardial Mesothelioma is a rare form of mesothelioma cancer that accounts for approximately 5% of all mesothelioma cases. Cancerous cells build up on the lining of the heart.

What is the cause of pericardial mesothelioma?

Asbestos is the main cause of pericardial mesothelioma. When exposed to asbestos without sufficient protection, dust and fibres from the asbestos are inhaled and become lodged in the lungs. From here they can either pass into the lymphatic system and get transported to the lining of the heart or the fibres can just pass through to the heart over time.

Who is at risk from pericardial mesothelioma?

Those who have worked with asbestos constantly for a period of time without sufficient protection are those at risk. These people include construction workers and those who work in asbestos manufacturing plants. Individuals in contact with those in contact with asbestos are also at risk because asbestos fibres can cling to clothes and hair.

How much exposure to asbestos does it take to have a possibility of getting pericardial mesothelioma?

This varies depending on the concentration of the asbestos dust and fibres in the area but it has been recorded that those who have only been exposed for a couple of months have a chance of obtaining pericardial mesothelioma.

What are the symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma?

Common symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma are persistent coughing, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and palpitations. Other symptoms that patients may experience are weight loss, nausea and loss of appetite.

What is the latency period of pericardial mesothelioma?

All forms of mesothelioma have an extraordinarily long latency period (amount of time symptoms take to show up after having disease). The latency period is between 30 ? 50 years and so pericardial mesothelioma is usually discovered in elderly men who have had pericardial mesothelioma for most of their life but have never known it.

What is the prognosis for pericardial mesothelioma?

This is highly dependent on how early and how aggressively the cancerous cells are treated. If the cancer is treated when it has fully developed and matured then the chances of a patient?s survival is very small. The prognosis could be only a couple of months.

Is there any promising research for pericardial mesothelioma?

At the moment, research into pericardial mesothelioma is being conducted all over the USA in research labs and also many pharmaceutical companies are endeavouring to find new drugs for chemotherapy. So far, there is still no cure for mesothelioma although researchers predict that new drugs will soon be discovered.

    All Pericardial Mesothelioma Information FAQ

    What is pericardial mesothelioma?

Pericardial mesothelioma is a serious heart condition which consists of cancerous cells building up on the lining of the heart. Similarly to pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma, this is a terminal illness due to the importance of the area on which it grows.

What causes pericardial mesothelioma and who are most at risk?

The primary cause of pericardial mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos dust and fibres. Therefore those at risk are those who are most likely to have inhaled these deadly fibres such as construction workers and asbestos manufacturers. Those in contact with these people also have a chance of getting pericardial mesothelioma because these people may have asbestos fibres stuck to their clothes or hair.

What are the symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma?

The symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma change from patient to patient. Usual symptoms include persistent coughing, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and palpitations. Other symptoms patients may experience are nausea, weight loss, vomiting and loss of appetite.

What are the treatments available for pericardial mesothelioma?

There are various different treatments for pericardial mesothelioma although none of these have a high success rate. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, dual therapy and surgery are the treatment methods available. Chemotherapy includes using drugs to kill off cancerous cells and radiation therapy uses doses of radiation to kill cancer cells although this is difficult in the case of pericardial mesothelioma due to the surrounding vital organs such as the heart and lungs. Dual therapy is a treatment combining radiation therapy with chemotherapy. Surgery comes in two forms; aggressive surgery and palliative procedures. Aggressive surgery is a very difficult procedure and consists of removing large chunks of cancerous cells in an attempt to gain long term control over the cancer. Palliative procedures just attempts to lessen the symptoms for the patient.

How much exposure to asbestos is needed for there to be a possibility of getting pericardial mesothelioma?

This depends on how strong and resistant the person is to disease and on the concentration of asbestos in the environment around him. It is possible to get pericardial mesothelioma from as little as a couple of months of exposure to asbestos although on average it would take a couple of years for enough asbestos fibres to build up to cause cancer.

What is the prognosis for pericardial mesothelioma?

This is highly dependent on how early and how aggressively the cancer is treated. If pericardial mesothelioma is treated when it has fully developed and matured then the chances of a patient?s survival is very small. The prognosis could be only a couple of months.

Is there any promising research into cures for pericardial mesothelioma?

Research into cures of pericardial mesothelioma and all other forms of mesothelioma is being done in numerous research labs all over the USA. Many pharmaceutical companies are also working hard to research new drugs for chemotherapy. So far, research has been mostly unsuccessful.

    Green Tea Acne Treatment

If you are looking for a healthy way to help keep your acne under control without resorting to the typical over-the-counter topical drugs that may cause more harm than good, green tea may be a treatment worth looking into. Green tea has long been a staple of traditional Chinese medicine, taken to treat ailments such as acne as well as to improve general health. It has become popular worldwide both for its taste and the many health benefits it provides.

Green tea is definitely a healthy beverage, but is it really effective at treating acne? The answer seems to be yes, although how effective it is may depend on the severity of your acne (and just how much green tea you are willing to drink). The main reason for green tea?s effectiveness is due to the fact that green tea is extremely rich in antioxidants. Thus, by drinking plenty of green tea you help rid toxins from your body and maintain a healthy cell structure.

Besides fighting off bacteria, research has shown that green tea can help reduce redness and inflammation, and even deter hormonal activity. Thus green tea can both speed healing and help prevent acne, which is often caused by the activity of hormonal shifts.

For acne treatment, green tea may be taken as a drink, a pill (green tea extract), or in a topical cream. Also, simply placing a warm teabag on acne lesions can help draw out toxins and promote faster healing.

By far the most popular method is simply drinking green tea. Green tea with honeysuckle is known as ?pimple tea? in many Chinatowns. Drinking a glass of green tea each day will help a little, but if you plan to use green tea as a main factor in your fight against acne, you will need a higher dose. For more dramatic results, many regimens recommend as much as 8 glasses of green tea each day until your skin clears. This is most effective if the tea is freshly brewed and sugar-free. Preservatives and sugar will neutralize many of green tea?s benefits.

Taken as a pill, green tea is similar to vitamins for acne that focus on detoxifying your skin through antioxidants. Unfortunately, this approach does not typically work as well as simply drinking green tea due to the fact that the nutrients are much more easily absorbed as a liquid rather than a pill.

According to a recent study reported to the American Academy of Dermatology, a topical cream with 3% green tea extract produced similar results to a solution containing 4% benzoyl peroxide. Thus, green tea appears to be very effective as a spot treatment as well, without causing the dryness and irritation that generally go along with benzoyl peroxide. However, I would still recommend drinking the tea over using a topical cream, since the benefits of the topical treatment are limited to only the applied area, and do not include hormonal effects that can help you actually avoid, or at least diminish the intensity of, future acne.

Makeup Tips for Eyes Lips and Face

When I hit my 30's, I decided to get more serious about skin care and makeup. I've become a regular at Department Store 'Bonus Days', when you buy an item and get a bunch of samples for free! Cosmetics and makeup can be fun, easy and inexpensive if you follow these tips!

    Your Eyes:

    1. For great looking eyes make sure to use powder shadows for a natural look and a eyeliner pencil for drama at night. Make sure the liner has a smudge tip at one end to get that smoky eye look. Only line the top of the eye is you're looking tired. You don't want to bring more attention to dark circles under the eyes. Neutral tones with a hint of color are flattering on everybody.

    2. For sheen on the eyelids, dab a bit of Vaseline for a pretty reflective quality, as well as moisture.

    3. Open up the eye with a gold/beige shimmery high lighter onto the brow bone.

    4. Don't throw away cash on an expensive eye makeup remover! Find a pretty glass bottle and fill it with baby shampoo.

    5. If your cream eye shadow dries out, use a few drops of water or mineral oil to soften it up again.

    5. Potatoes, like cucumbers, will reduce the appearance of dark, under-eye circles.

    Your Lips:

    1. Use blush as a lipstick, then use clear gloss or lip balm over it. Longer staying power.

    2. Natural ingredients have been used for centuries as makeup: apply beet juice to lips and cheeks as a stain,or mix it with melted bees wax to make your own lip balm! Cayenne pepper can plump the lips, but use with caution!

    3. Use eye makeup remover to treat super dry, chapped lips. It's a great nighttime lip treatment!

    Your Face:

    1. For a longer lasting foundation try a product with silicone. The silicone creates a sweat-proof and smudge resistant second skin. For me, I find it helps with my rosacea because the live yeast extract has healing powers.

    2. A powder bronzer under blush can really even out skin tone. I dab my brush in the bronzer, then into the blush and lightly cover my whole face.

    3. For a new bronzer, use a foundation that is two to three shades darker than your skin tone and apply where you would use your bronzer. In a pinch you could use a brown eye shadow.

    4. Papaya mixed with plain yogurt into a paste makes a great exfoliating mask for all skin types!

    5. Use an egg white mask for a quick fix for diminishing the appearance of pores.

    Hawthorn For a Healthy Heart

One of the safest of all the herbal heart remedies, Hawthorn is said to be one of the best herbs for the cardiovascular system. Because of the research that has been conducted in Europe on Hawthorn, it has become fully recognized as a heart remedy; These studies concluded that Hawthorn helped to strengthen the contractions of the heart, it helped to normalize an irregular heart beat, and increased coronary circulation. Although, it's affect on lowering blood pressure are mild, when combined with other hypotensive herbs such as ginkgo, and dandelion leaf, Hawthorn is on the most popular herbs for reducing blood pressure.

Research suggests that by dilating the coronary arteries which increases oxygen and blood flow, Hawthorn helps to reduce angina and relieves cardiac hypoxemia, which is a reduced amount of oxygen to the heart. It is also highly recommended in the early stages of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). Because it contains very potent flavonoids that protect the heart from oxidization, Hawthorn has shown much success in treating those recovering from heart attacks. Known as a tonic herb for the heart, Hawthorn nourishes the cells of the heart and is beneficial in any degenerative condition relating to the heart. These potent flavonoids also help to reduce inflammation and therefore, help to lower cholesterol levels. Although, it's effects are not rapid, Hawthorn has proved to be safe when used for an extended period of time. Often times it is recommended for the prevention of heart disease.

In conclusion, with all of its benefits, there are no known side effects from this herb. Hawthorn has proved to be a safe an effective alternative to many cardiovascular medications which pose additional risks because of their side effects. With additional research, Hawthorn may prove to have other benefits that have yet to reveal themselves.

    Win the Winter

Long nights, short days, sparkling snow flakes and people dressed in warm clothes are the images evoked for the word winter. The winter season is marked as Hemanta ritu and Sisira ritu in ayurveda. Hemanta ritu starts from mid November and ends in mid January. This falls in southern solstice which is called as visarga kala or dakshinayana in ayurveda. Sisira ritu starts from mid January and lasts till middle of march. Sisira ritu falls in Northern solstice which is called as Aadana kaala or uttaraayana.

Winter causes health problems when adequate precautions and safety measures are not taken. But winters can be enjoyed to full extent when we alter our diet and lifestyles a little as nature desires. As we are part of nature these changes help us to face the seasonal changes without much serious health problems.

    Beat the winter time Blues

Few experience a condition called Winter Time Blues. This condition precipitates symptoms like increase in appetite, craving for sweets, chocolates or starchy foods, weight gain, mild depression, irritability and short temper. This condition is well marked in persons who live in places which experience long severe winter.

In winter the agni or body fire increases with the support of vata . Hence there will be a marked increase in appetite. The frequency of food consumption increases. We should keep a watch on the type of food we consume to satisfy our appetite during winter. Avoid consumption of junk foods, too much of sweets and oil food as these lead to weight gain.

Simple remedies for this condition are exposing our body to sunlight, exercising for 30 minutes and using bright light when you are indoors

    Pamper your skin during winter

During winter skin can not replenish its moisture naturally due to less humidity in air. Low humidity due to indoor heating, hot showers and bath exaggerates this condition and skin is bound to become dry and irritated. Dry skin tends to crack and bleed. Cracked skin looses its ability to protect the body and increases the risk of infection. The best ways to keep the skin soft, healthy and moisturized are

?Avoid long hot showers and bath.

?Quick three minutes bath is advisable.

    ?Use moisturizing body wash.

?Apply petroleum jelly on tough areas like knees, elbows and heels .

?Apply lip balm to prevent cracking.

?Twenty to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week can give your skin a healthy glow

?Ayurveda stresses on massaging body with oil during winter

    Special care for your face

Avoid washing your face repeatedly. This washes off natural oils from our skin and makes the skin dry, scaly and wrinkled. Use luke warm water instead of hot water to wash face. Apply moisturizer lotion if you feel dryness on skin. Apply sun screen lotion to exposed parts of body and face when you go out in sun.

Preventing cold and cough in winter.

Consume well balanced good nutritious food, exercise thrice in a week and sleep well to keep up natural resistance. Avoid direct contact with those who have colds and wash your hands frequently.

    Hypothermia

Hypothermia is a drop in body temperature to 95 degrees Fahrenheit or less than this. This can be fatal if not detected promptly and treated properly. Any body can be the victim of hypothermia. The elderly are at the highest risk as their bodies do not adjust to the changes in temperature quickly. This condition takes few days to few weeks to develop. A temperature of 60F to 65 F can trigger this condition. A drop in body temperature triggers fatal responses from body. The blood vessels near the body surface narrow to prevent heat loss. Muscles tighten to generate heat. Person affected by hypothermia will be having symptoms like shivering, drowsiness, slurred speech, week pulse, slow heart beat, slow and shallow breathing. If the body temperature falls down below 86 F he may slip into coma.

Do not try to treat a person with hypothermia at home. Immediately shift him to hospital as soon as you notice the symptoms. Do not give alcoholic beverages and do not give him hot water bath.

In ayurveda it is advised to drink hot water, wear warm clothes and to stay near fire place at indoors in winter to prevent this condition

    Frostbite

The exposed areas of body like face, feet, wrists and hands are affected by frost bite. The skin on the affected part becomes white, stiff and feels numb. Warm the affected parts gradually. Wrap the area with warm clothes or keep the affected hands under arm pits and seek the medical attention immediately. Do not rub the affected areas as it may damage the underlying tissues.

Protect your tiny tots from cold.

Children are usually thrilled to go outside irrespective of weather conditions. To ensure that these tiny tots have a safe and fun winter, take some simple measures to keep them warm and unharmed both inside and outside. Ensure that they stay warm while waiting for school bus in low temperature conditions. Keep them as dry as possible in cold weather and make them to wear properly fitting warm clothes. Cover their head, face and neck as much as possible. Inadequate head protection lead to loss of almost half of body heat . Don?t allow them to overexert and sweat. Sweating cools the body which is hazardous in winter and it becomes difficult to warm up again. Keep them well hydrated as they may not drink sufficient water in winter due to less thirst.

Other general precautions by Red Cross for winter.

Dress in layers so you can adjust to changing conditions. Avoid overdressing or overexertion that can lead to heat illness.

Most of your body heat is lost through your head so wear a hat, preferably one that covers your ears.

Mittens provide more warmth to your hands than gloves.

Wear waterproof, insulated boots to help avoid hypothermia or frostbite by keeping your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in ice and snow.

Get out of wet clothes immediately and warm the core body temperature with a blanket or warm fluids like hot cider or soup. Avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol if you expect you or someone you are trying to help has hypothermia or frostbite.

Recognize the symptoms of hypothermia that can be a serious medical condition: confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering. Seek medical attention immediately if you have these symptoms.

Recognize frostbite warning signs: gray, white or yellow skin discoloration, numbness, waxy feeling skin. Seek medical attention immediately if you have these symptoms.

Home made natural scrub for winter.

    * Mix yellow gram (channa), green gram (moong), fenu greek seeds (methi) in equal proportion. Get this mixture floured. Use this flour as scrub while taking bath instead of soap and body washes.

    * Mix few drops of coconut oil in little water. Rub this all over body at the end of bath or shower. Dab the body with towel. This helps to increase the moisture of skin naturally.

We wish you a healthy winter. Have a great winter!

Staying Active Helps Reduce Risk of Prostate Cancer

Those men who stay active can significantly cut down on their risk getting prostate cancer. In fact the more aerobic the exercise the better; walking, hiking, swimming and bike riding were some of the examples given in a study by Harvard Medical School on ways to stay healthy and simultaneously reduce your risk of prostate cancer. Those who went to a gym twice to three times per week and used the treadmill did best, although even those who played golf three times a week reduced their risks as well.

Most all physical activity which included a form of cardiorespiratory workout seemed to work. These men were able to reduce their risks by 75%, a huge gap over those were the most inactive one-third of all males. The cut off seemed to be 20 minutes per day or an average of 20 minutes a day over a weeks period. Those who worked out three times a week for thirty minutes are more were amongst the lowest risk groups. Some life insurance questionnaires now ask these questions, when determining risk and that ought to tell you something as well. Not only is it good for your heart but your prostate as well.

There are two factors being looked at as to why this is? One thought was that since high testosterone levels were are part of high risk categories, that those who did physical activity reduced their risks because they were lowering their testosterone levels during cardio respiratory workouts. This tends to make a lot of sense.

It would be best to get screened for prostate cancer and continue your work outs or increase them to put you into the lower risk categories. Discuss this with your physician and do some of your own research to see what works best for you. Please be thinking on this, it could save your life.

Will There Be Any Signs Or Changes That I Should Be Perceptive Of When Receiving Distant Healing?

I am sure some people feel the warmth growing in their hearts from the love which is being beamed to them. However, I am also sure that no two people will have the same experience, as we are all unique.

I feel it is better that you look deep within your own heart for the answers. Look for any recurring dreams that you keep putting off, or any unfulfilled desire which just will not go away.

Quite often, dis-ease comes from having blocked energy flows. Life has to flow like water running down to the ocean and, if we are aware of what we should be doing but keep holding back, this is a recipe for gaining stuck energy or stagnant water.

Open yourself up to the whole universe: embrace your Dark Side and accept it as a part of your Self; this Dark Side defines the good and healthy aspects of life. To be truly happy and healthy you will expand into wholeness and balance.

The most important thing is to love yourself and go for what brings joy and happiness into your life. Do not resist change, because it is through change that we grow and evolve.

Look out for new experiences, go to new places and meet new people. Expand your area of influence and flow your energy in new directions. This is what brings living to life.

Bodybuilding Basics: Why Can't I Get Bigger? Part 1

I'm so frustrated! I cannot get any bigger and I'm not getting stronger! Sound familiar? Maybe you've said it yourself. You go to the gym religously, spend hour after hour doing bench presses for your chest, rows and pulldowns for your back, barbell curls and tricep extensions for you arms yet nothing is happening. Or at least not what you were hoping for when you started bodybuilding.

Here's a true story: Some years ago I was approached by a gym buddy who asked me what my thoughts were on his training. His frustration was over the fact that in over 3 years of working out and lifting weights, his physique had changed only minimally and his lifts were not much better than when he had started.

I had been watching him and sometimes working out with him for a couple of years so I was aware of his training style: On chest days he would typically start off with some warm-up reps and then would get started on the flat bench. He would usually pyramid up from a starting weight where he would do 12-15 reps and typically would finish at about 4 reps on his sixth set!

Then, he'd usually go to the incline bench, grab the heaviest weight he could handle for 5 or 6 reps and would do another 4 sets with that. He would then go to an incline chair and do more incline dumbbell flyes. After this, he would further blast his poor chest muscles with pec deck, decline and sometimes cable flyes. By the time he was done with just his chest, he'd spent almost an hour and typically had done anywhere from 18 to 24 sets!

What this guy didn't need was advice, he needed a REST! He was so overworking his chest muscles that by the time he came back to work them the following session (sometimes only 4 days later), they could not possibly recuperate/recover from the blasting he had just given them. If this guy had been in his 20's he might have had a chance but the fact that he was in his early 40's only made things worse.

This story perfectly illustrates one of the main reasons why people have such a hard time building muscle: Overtraining.

Muscles grow by being subjected to stress. You lift a weight, stress the muscle and if all goes well, in time that muscle will grow to accomodate the stress being put on it. But the muscle does not grow while you are in the gym. That is when you are actually breaking down the muscle. The growth/repair comes when you give your body enough time to repair the muscle that has been worked thereby allowing it to grow. Overtraining occurs when the muscle is put under too much stress and the recovery time is not enough for it to repair itself.

Another example of a specific muscle being overtrained is the biceps/triceps group. Too many times, I'll get to they gym, start my workout and see some guy doing biceps. Set after set after exhausting set. I'm done with my workout and they're still doing curls. It is unnecessary and counterproductive.

So What Is The Exact Number Of Sets I Should Do?
There is no set formula for any one person. What works for you might not work for me. What works for an 18 year old will almost certainly not work for a 50 year old! The truth is that it is trial and error. You will have to find the sweet spot in your training that allows you to stress your muscle fibers but also allows you to come back on your next session and blast them again. As a very general rule and depending on age and experience, hitting each muscle group twice a week should be something to shoot for. But if you are not making gains, take a look at both the number of sets you're doing and the frequency that you're working a group. Remember, sometimes less is more!

In Part 2 of this series, I'll touch on another reason why you might not be making any gains - Stagnant Training

Asthma Treatment Medications May Not Be Worth the Side Effects

As with most conventional drugs, when one truly considers the side-effects that the drugs may have, it makes one wonder if they are even worth being prescribed and used both by the medical fraternity and vulnerable patients. For asthma treatment, this is no exception.

Having suffered from asthma personally from the age of 7 (well, that?s the first time I remember having an attack) to about 7 years ago, I can say first hand that I strongly think most asthma medications just may not be worth the use.

The first time I was told ?Hey, there is no cure for asthma?, I remember thinking as a child: ?What, do you mean to tell me if someone playfully pats me on the back, or if I laugh hard at something, I?d have to always be scared of an asthma attack??

Thank God?they were wrong. Asthma is indeed curable and with inexpensive and common-sense methods at that. Moreover, when one discovers how, one actually may view most common asthma medications as laughable propaganda hyped up to make a buck at the vulnerable and desperate sufferers of this respiratory disease.

Now friends, Ventolin as an inhaler or oral medication, is arguably the most prescribed from of medication for asthma control. However, studies have indicated that this drug might actually cause more harm than good in regards to asthma treatment.

Since no two humans are alike, symptoms of these side effects do vary from patient to patient, nonetheless here are some of the side effects as revealed by research in writing this article and perhaps it may steer the applicable to consider other ways of coping with this respiratory disorder naturally.

The side effects of this popular drug include:

    1. Shaking, usually of the hands (tremor)

    2. Nervous tension

    3. Headache

    4. Faster than normal heart beat (tachycardia)

    5. Awareness of your heart beat (heart palpitations)

    6. Muscle cramps

    7. Low blood potassium level (hypokalaemia)

    8. Unexpected narrowing of the airways (paradoxical bronchospasm)

The side effects listed above may not include all of the ones reported by the drug's manufacturer. For more information about any other possible risks associated with this medicine, you can always look at what the drug manufacturers have indicated on the package itself.

At this point, it leaves the question of what alternative treatments of asthma can be used and are there any at all.

Indeed there are and although that?s another subject into itself, what worked for me (and is in effect in the Breath Retaining Program for Asthmatics developed by the Russian, Dr. Buteyko) was a drastic change in my diet, some mild breathing exercises as akin to Yoga (I picked this physical culture up as a therapeutic means of building fitness after years of having to be indoors) and other common sense methods such as avoiding excessive cold, dust and the like. However, the last steps are more of preventive measures more than anything.

Breathing is the very essence of living, asthma need not be a barrier any longer in your existence and you need not use side-effect laden drugs at that to curb it. There are successful methods of treating your asthma out there. Since they worked for me and several others who have used them, chances are they can work for you.

    Here?s to breathing freer.

How to Spot a Natural and Alternative Medical Quack

Why are so many alternative health sites more alternative than health? I don't know either, but typing natural health or alternative medicine into a search engine will show you just how many natural health sites there are these days. And the topics range from do-it-yourself therapies like aromatherapy to highly invasive procedures like colonics. So how do you know which sites are giving solid medical advice and which are preying on the fears of people overwhelmed by this huge topic? Here are some tips to help you sort the nonsense from the facts:

Not All Alternative Health Organizations Are Legitimate

For every natural health expert who works hard to legitimize his or her area of expertise there are dozens of charlatans just waiting to pounce on unsuspecting (and often desperate) people. If the verbiage on a web site or in a brochure feels more like a hard-sell than an attempt to educate clients it probably is. Natural health is a multi-billion dollar industry in the US and quackery is, unfortunately, more common than factual information.

Natural Medicine Is About Empowerment--Not Fear

For some reason natural health practitioners are among the worst offenders when it comes to instilling feelings of fear, anger and disenfranchisement into their clients. When I see claims like the government wants to suppress this or the medical community doesn't want you to read this I have to wonder why practitioners are moved to such desperate measures just to sell a bottle of herbs. Legitimate practitioners work to educate clients--not polarize and frighten them.

Legitimate Practitioners Don't Have To Exaggerate

Phrases like miraculous breakthrough or works for a variety of ailments may get your attention but they should also ring your mental warning bells. And be especially skeptical if you see something like absolutely no side effects. If a treatment is powerful enough to cause such a profound change in your body it's going to have at least some potential for side effects.

    Legitimate Practitioners Cite Their Sources

No one practices in an intellectual vacuum. All legitimate practitioners--even those in natural health--use and read peer-reviewed literature. Look for specific references like in the June issue of instead of a study showed in articles and web copy. The more detail provided, the better.

    No Therapy Is A Cure-All

Legitimate practitioners will offer you a variety of options; they won't try to limit you to their own favorite therapy. I suspect that every practitioner (natural or mainstream) is at least a little bit biased but a good one will work to design a full-spectrum program.

    Most Important

Natural practitioners are often accused of trying to turn people away from mainstream medicine (and some do) but no legitimate practitioner believes that prescription drugs are evil. Overused, sometimes, but never evil. Legitimate practitioners will encourage their clients to minimize their dependencies on drugs by making changes in their lifestyles but they also know that medications are sometimes a necessary part of life.

Next Time Try a Cheese or Chocolate Facial!

Adult acne is not uncommon, so don't be alarmed if you have it! Even if you are at the age of 35 and have noticed the same acne you had when you were 16, rest assured there are many people like you. One in five women between the ages of 25 and 40 has adult acne. Obviously, seeking a good acne treatment is your first step to getting rid of this along with exceptionally good personal hygiene. It usually begins with blackheads which are the result of oil and dead cells getting trapped in a pore and blocking the duct as it mixes with bacteria. As soon as they are exposed to the air, they turn black. If a blackhead should become inflamed, red pimples will develop. They should not be touched with dirty hands as they can be spread easily.

If you have infected adult acne, there are many effective adult acne treatments that can be purchased over-the-counter. Usually when the pimple becomes infected, it develops as a whitehead or pustule. If not properly tended to, these can break and can cause acne scars.

If you have adult acne, there can be several causes. Stress is a big factor in today's society and is certainly one that can be an underlying cause in many cases. Other causes such as hormones, birth control pills, and cosmetics can all cause adult acne. When you are under stress, your oil glands tend to overcompensate. If you apply poor quality cosmetics to your skin, they can lead to bacteria laden pores. The androgen in birth control pills can cause breakouts. One myth that says cheese and chocolate aggravate your acne is simply not true. All you need in a lot of cases is a good facial. This can rectify or at least bring your adult acne problem under control.

    Sunburn Minimizing The Risk

Anyone who continually exposes their skin to the harsh conditions of the sun is running the risk of skin damage known as sunburn. This condition can be quite painful and uncomfortable but, worse still, it can lead to the serious illness of skin cancer.

In recent years, because of the knowledge we now have about the damage to the ozone layer, many people have become more wary about this overexposure to the suns rays. The ozone layer which is the part of the earth's atmosphere that protects the planet from ultraviolet radiation, has been damaged by the common usage of things such as synthetic pollutants. Consequently, these ultraviolet rays are now more dangerous than ever before.

Often, we do not feel the effects of sunburn until several hours after the damage is done. This is because sunburn is actually a radiation burn rather than a heat burn. These burns are caused by the ultraviolet rays from the sun. These rays can damage the skin through penetration without the person necessarily feeling that their skin is overheating.

The skin consists of an outer layer, the epidermis, and the bottom layer, the basal layer. It is the epidermis that suffers the effects of sunburn. This is the layer that contains the pigmentation cells which, when new cells appear as a result of the sun, is seen as a suntan. If there is not enough pigment filters, it results in sunburn.

Sunburn is an immediate type of sun damage but its effects may not show for several hours after exposure. Reddening of the skin and a burning feeling may take up to twenty four hours to occur. If the sunburn is severe, blisters may occur, causing damage to some of the cells in the epidermis.

Sun damage from repeated exposure are much like those of aging. The skin shows wrinkling and thickening of the skin. Lumps that look like warts can appear as well as dryness and cracking of the skin.

In modern times, the biggest concern to most sun-worshippers is that of skin cancer. Realistically, people who have often suffered from sunburn have a higher likelihood of contracting skin cancer than people who have never been sunburned. In areas where there is a lot of bright sunshine, such as Australia, the incidence of skin cancer is very high. In fact, Australia has the highest frequency of skin cancer in the world.

It is extremely important to be particularly vigilant where children are concerned. If a child is often exposed to sunburn, he or she is at a higher risk of contracting skin cancer when they become adults.

Once a person has been sunburned, the most important thing is to avoid exposure which will obviously cause more damage. Applying a soothing lotion can reduce the discomfort which will usually recede within a few days. Once the initial discomfort is reduced, the skin may peel. When the damage is severe, a steroidal lotion may be prescribed. These lotions reduce inflammation as well as the potency and duration of the sunburn.

There are a number of ways to protect the skin from sunburn. The most natural way is to gradually increase periods of time in the sun in order to build up a tan. The sun is also less intense when it is low such as morning and evening so it makes sense to enjoy the sun at these times rather than in the middle of the day when the sun is at its peak. Some people believe that they are safer when swimming but this is untrue. Although the water absorbs the heat, the ultraviolet rays are still directed on the skin.

Sunscreen should be applied frequently during exposure to the sun, and especially immediately before and after swimming. Some of the sunscreens available give virtually complete protection by stopping all ultraviolet rays, thus allowing prolonged time in the sun without resulting in damage.

Of course, not all effects of the sun are negative and exposure to sunlight is necessary for health. It is essential for vitamins C and D and creates a healthy glowing skin.

So, it is important to have some exposure to the health benefits of the sun but, like anything else, moderation is the key. Sensible exposure is a positive way of life but overexposure is nothing more than a recipe for disaster.

    Mesothelioma Pleural Brachytherapy

Mesothelioma Pleural is a lethal cancer that initially affects the thin membrane enveloping the lungs. This affliction is mostly caused by exposure to asbestos. Currently about 3000 cases are reported in the United States every year. But according to reliable estimates, nearly 8 million people have been exposed to asbestos during the past fifty years and about .3 million new cases would turn up by 2030. Higher rate of incidence is noted in the Pacific and Mid-Atlantic States.

The disease is almost always fatal. If it is detected early, surgery could be helpful. But the problem is that Mesothelioma Pleural has a long latent period of 20 to 40 years or more and by the time it is diagnosed the cancer would be usually in an advanced stage. There is no universally accepted line of treatment as of now. Chemotherapy is not considered effective. Several combination therapies are tried.

Radiation may be of use, particularly as a palliative measure. Here the problem is that since mesothelioma is resistant to radiation, high doses have to be applied. This, not only kill the cancerous cells but also the good ones. To overcome the difficulty, many doctors who treat mesothelioma pleural patients are employing a century old procedure known as Brachytherapy, which was being, and still is, used for treatment of certain other cancers.

Brachytherapy today is a high-tech and precise form of radiation. It is a process applied internally instead of through a gadget outside the body. Radioactive sources (sealed in needles, catheters, seeds or wires) are planted on the tumor or very close to it. By this process the radiation is focused on the bad cells and therefore spares the good ones. This has been found to be effective.

Like all radiation, Brachytherapy also has side effects. But they are minor ones like short duration soreness in the area where the procedure is done. There is nothing to worry about if the patient follows the doctor?s instructions.

A Very Natural Acne Remedy For Healthy Looking Skin With No Chemicals

Most of us suffer from the blemishes or acne that appear on our skin. There are so many different products out there, that it is hard to choose which one might work for your skin. Trying all of the different products can be time consuming, expensive and can even make you break out more. The real key to maintaining a healthy complextion is to naturally take care of your skin. There are some simple principles that you can follow with out having to buy expensive creams and medicine.

The first thing that your skin is very sensitive to is consitancy. If you find a schedule for washing you face that seems to keep it fresh and oil free, you must stick to it. It is recomended that you wash your face twice a day in the morning and evening. If you disrupt this cycle your skin will break out. It is also important how you wash your face. Dead skin can trap oil in your pores and cause pimples. Soap alone will not remove the excess dead skin by itself. A scrubbing soap is the best way to exfoliate and remove the dead skin. Many of these scrubs offer extra acids and such, but I recommend to find one that just has rough beads with no chemicals. You are trying to bring your skin to a natural clean. For guys, shaving with a razor is also a great way to keep your skin clear but you don't shave your whole face.

With clean skin there are a couple of other natural things you can do to help keep a clear complextion. Regular exercise will help clear out the pores with sweat, but you must make sure to wash your face after you have cooled down to remove dirt and oils that may have accumulated during exercise. Exercise can affect your hormone levels, which can result in more acne in some individuals. Keep this in mind. One of the greates natural ways to maintain a clean healthy look is to get some sun light exposure. Use a oil free facial sunscreen and get about a half hour or more of direct sun light. Then rinse your skin with some salt water. This is easy for beach goers, but there is also a way for inlanders. After getting some sun make a solution of water and sea salts that is room temputature and rinse you face. This naturally dries you skin and revitalizes it. Our skin was meant to be exposed to the elements and it has a healthy reaction when done in moderation.
